Husqvarna keyless fuelcap mod
« on: July 25, 2015, 07:26:52 pm »
Have been wanting to do this mod for a while now already. Hate to have a second seperate key just for the fuelcap - could never see the logic in that.

Get hold of that stylish Husky cap and flip it upside down.

First thing to do is to press down on the barrel spring, slide a small screwdriver behind the pin and with the spring compressed press it out towards the open side of the cap. It comes out easily.

Release the compression slowly and you will be left with the cap, the spring and the plastic housing

Next press the tumbler shaft from the bottom out through the top of the fuel cap.

Note the o-ring and the rubber shroud surrounding the key slot. If you take it off note how its two tabs must engage in the cap recess when re-fitting to ensure that it sits flush.

Next step is to grind off the individual tabs.

I used a small grinding wheel on my dremel tool for the job. The tabs are spring loaded, so I pressed a small screwdriver into the back of each to let the tab stand out properly, held it like that and then used the dremel to grind it down. Repeat for all the tabs.

Refitting is simple enough - remember the o-ring, line up the tumbler barrel with the tabs facing forward, align the rubber shroud tabs to fit and press the barrel back into the fuelcap from the top.

Flip around and refit the green spring housing, the spring and the cap.

Press down on the spring and refit the pin from the open end, through the hole and until the pin is flush with its housing on the far side.

Mod completed.

Took my ignition key and tested. The fuelcap can now be opened by any key, knife or screwdriver.
