Tracking will only let you zoom in to 50kms. Alex really taking steps to not leaving cheating door open.

Kinda sucks for us trying to follow as I would love to have google satellite view up close to see what they're riding on (in)

Looking at the Live tracking - https://data.africanstuff.co.za/raceview/race/racemap/amageza-2015/ - I can't seem to zoom in too much - anybody help?

This is correct. Seems there is nothing we can do at least until tomorrow. I have already asked Steve if he can change its but very he will have time to worry about that right now.

The good news is that we can still do something about it. You can see that this page is managed by tracks 4 Africa. So we need to inundate them with support calls and emails to get them to enable us to zoom in to a 500m scale at least. (at the moment the minimum scale is 50km).

Is there anyone in Stellenbosch who can go into their offices and talk to them tomorrow morning? The rest of us need to phone in and/or email them asking them to make the change. Hopefully we can use social media to make this happen. The more of us who try the more it is likely to work.

Then again, it might be that the orga don't want us to zoom in more than it is setup.  :-\

They first went onto some dirt near KMB.

Ended up in Schmidtsdrif.
Dirt mostly to Reivilo (my favorite town in RSA).

Then west to Kuruman. Some lekker white gravel out that way. Lots of guys have come off on DS trips in this area as there are patches of sand on otherwise fast roads. Liaison distance.

Refuel in Kuruman. Looks like the front guys are barely going to make the official start in time.

I see Claude Deysel is lead a group of guys that have fallen behind the pack a little. Possibly a mechanical or a wrong turn...

hmm I look up Barbara, and she is near the tail end with her last recorded position showing only at 08h31.

Hope they are updating more often than that!?

That white gravel better to get out of the way early in the day,the glare off that is hectic. But all around that area you get that white gravel. Did our bush training in that area.

I believe it was 2 degrees this morning...could it really have been that cold?

Peter How via FB: Quick update. Mapbooks marked. Up at 4am tomorrow. Roger Ryder Kane-Berman and I are starting 1st bikes on the track. Its gonna be a 650 odd km day. Long Liason to start and then 200km of what lools like some open stuff with a few tricks up Alexander Nel 's sleave no doubt to keep us glued to the roadbook. A spanner in the works with there being NO waypoints this year which will no doubt make for some badly lost riders..... Welcome to amageza 2015...welcome to a marathom stage straight up....welcome to the jungle.... braaaap. Later

Some photos from this am

Simon Schimmel

Ian and Co. looking a bit stressed!

But deep down really happy!

Yip, seems I was wrong. If there have been no big delays there will be a 20-30 minute wait before the start. Wonder if they will let the guys leave early? I think not.

Zoom is limited as a security feature. The tracking is real-time, but detail limited so that riders cannot be directed real- time.

Sweep 1 and 2 past bike 137... Is being assist by bakkie.
Later: 137 back on the road

133 fuel pump faulty at Kopp man's fontein

First bikes should be at Sean any moment now. They will hold until 11:15, then start 2 every minute, same order as this morning.

Chopper is in the air, expect some awesome pics from Oakpics.

Niels. Dutch reporter and media liaison for Roberts Racing team sends me a daily update and photos.
He is traveling with the team.
Roberts Racing is a professional racing team, that race ralley raids over the world.
My friend Paul, no 128 is racing with team, all was done for him, he literally just had to arrive and start racing
This is from Niels Hatzmann:

AMAZEGA starts with the Marathonstage

A long two-day monsterstage will mark the start of the Amageza tomorrow, taking the competitors from Kimberly to an undisclosed location near the border with Botswana, and then on to Kang in Botswana. With almost 5000 kilometers of special stage in 7 stages the Amageza tries to go beyond the length of the Dakar. ‘I am OK to be the second longest rally-raid in the world,’ says race-director Alexander Nel, with a smile.

Length comes at a price: starting from Kimberley with a long connection of about 400 km and with 30% tar road in the special stage the first day of the Amageza will be tough for the riders: not because of the terrain but first and foremost because of the length of the stages. ‘After the first day we go into Botswana and you’ll get more sand and tracks to ride than you can take,’ Alexander Nel explains. ‘This is not a game where you go flat-out, you have to think all the time and keep yourself and your bike in good shape to finish the event.’

Roberts Rallye Racing’s riders are preparing their roadbooks for the next day in the Guesthouse in Kimberley. It’s a luxury to have a place away from the busy bivouac and sit together and go through next days’ route. After a long day filled with paperwork and technical checks the bikes went into parc fermé, from which they will be released tomorrow morning at 5 o’clock, with the first bike starting at 6.

The goal of the Amageza is clear: ‘We want to offer a true rally raid adventure in Southern Africa,’ says Colin Fortine of Northern Cape. ‘Someone has to challenge the Dakar in South America and we are determined to grow! We have the terrain, the possibilities and the willpower to do this.’ With almost 100 starters and a good backing Alexander Nel is working towards a greater goal and with him the South African riders have specced up their teams and preparation: at the startline are more determined competitors than ever before, ready for almost 5000 km of hardcore racing.

BTW, some of the trackers might not be working...or have turned off. This is new system so it is quite possible there will be teething problems.

Word from the top is they wont allow zooming because its real time tracking and they don't want guys to be able to help riders who are lost etc.

At least we have tracking!! :thumleft: That's a big improvement.

So the guys were held back to 11h16. We officially have 6 riders away!

Estimated stage time is 2h30.

I have my own 450km liaison to do from Portugal back into Spain, so not withstanding any mechanical issues I'll only be back online this evening.

Happy racing!! :ricky:
