Well thats very scientific.
They "adjusted" for mileage over a 12 month period, and "estimated" repair
rates for 4 year old models without a service contract.

Statistics.....cant take them seriously.
It would be interesting however to know what they considered a "failure"

They could simply have phoned me and asked.

In that case the list would have been too short!

Dan's list

PERCENTAGE FAILED:

BMW 100%
Yamaha 0%

As far back as 1979, one of the major US motorcycle magazines had a very in-depth survey of motorcycle reliability.

What I remember is that individual models from manufacturers were even considered, that is how thorough this thing was. Well, even back then the Suzuki GS750
had a 5% breakdown rate, and the BMW 9%.
While on paper this sounded like the BMW was not that bad, but the survey also included rider's age groups and professions, and this is where it was interesting
to note that most of the Suzuki riders were in the sub-25 year age group and mostly blue-collar workers, while the BMW group was mostly in the post 45's,
and a remarkable percentage professional people.
The survey also pointed out that the Suzuki riders do more miles in general, while the BMW's were much more meticulously serviced.

All considered, nothing has changed.

So you agree that older professional people are harder on their bikes? That was one of the findings of the survey, not so?  ;)

A lot of people will fix small things on their bikes but who dares touch a R200 000 bike full of electronics thats still under warranty.

Especially when you have a service plan and roadside assist.

:imaposer:, or perhaps the bikes ridden by the older professional people were'nt hard enough?

The obvious deduction would be that the BMW's breakdown rate would have been much higher if ridden by the Suzuki group.

Before I could buy a motorcycle, I went to the head of Pretoria Traffic dept regarding their motorcycles.

My question was which ones was the most reliable and cost efficient as I had not a lot of money for services and repairs.

His answer was the BMW's went for services and tyres and didn't cost them anything else up to the time the Dept board the motorcycles on roughly 80 000km's.
He stressed that a traffic officer is a bit wild on the "bikes" and according to a survey - the clutch was pulled 7 000 times a shift.
The drive shafts and clutches never gave any problems.

I bought a BMW 1100 GS a few years later.....

I still don't have enough money...... :peepwall:

I wonder what such stats would have been 15 or so years ago. In my books, if these stats have some truth to them, then BMW is the elephant in the room, because most  R1150GS/A, R1100GS riders would attest to the reliability of their bikes over a number of years (I'm only thinking about the boxer engine here as this has been BMW's biggest seller, also one has to acknowledge that with all the electronics on new bikes these days, it's hard to make the bikes are reliable as before)

One of the big factors in reliability is usage, therefore if you compare a 22 year old windgat on a GSX-R1000 to a sedate old ballie on a R1100/1150GS, the Zook would probaby have to only have a fraction of the GS' kilometres on to be more reliable.
But I have no quarrel with anyone calling a GS1100/1150 reliable.

It is a survey of owners.  In general, I think the more expensive and / or exclusive the vehicle the more full of sheets the owners would be.

Either he was ignorant or he was spinning you a faerie tale. I regularly frequented Bavarian Motorcycles, when Bruce was still there and had free access to their workshop. I can tell many, many tales of totally f#cked up drives hafts and clutches from the Traffic Dept. I still vividly recall Simon pointing out to me a gearbox of which the splines were smooth as a spoon. Even Simon was shocked.

Typical of the shameless lies and cover-ups of these faceless loudmouth BMW agent fans. :pot: :peepwall:
But seriously, Stellenbosch also used the old R80 BMW's, and yes, they were sold off in favour of GS'..............GS500 Suzukis. :ricky:
