KTM 690 improvements?
« on: September 15, 2015, 03:07:05 pm »
Hi Guys.

Would appreciate input.

Alternative mirrors? Pro's, Cons? The stock mirror are useless due to vibrations.

And. Anyone else having trouble with false neutrals? I have 2 false neutrals between gears 4,5, and 6. Irritates the daylights out of me when overtaking someone and shifting up only to hear the sound polution from the wings exhaust as I hit the limiter with a false neutral.
Can immediately feel the people thinking I'm common... lol :cussing:

Thanks

I have foldable mirrors, better than stock but it's a single so they still vibrate. I sometimes hit false neutral between 5-6 but only when rushing the gear change

I have the double take mirrors. They also vibrate but no worse than the originals but fold away nicely. I also get false neutrals between 5 and 6.

A bit off-track, but not completely. It's a long shot but I will give it a try - did anybody here know about somebody who converted their 690 to the Nova wide ratio gearbox (as astronomically expensive as it is) and if so what was their feedback? This is the gearbox I'm talking about:

Here is the discussion that highlights changes in the gear ratios compared to the standard gearbox:

This is from my 625. I used bar end mirrors & mounted them underneath the handle bar. No vibration & I can see under my arms. I've got a fold away mirror for when I've got luggage.

I think maybe a 16 tooth front sprocket might be a cheaper alternative!

Sure, and I'll try that first if I buy 690.

But different sprocket will not change the gear ratios between the gears. The close ratio gearbox is my only pet peeve with this bike - I kept looking for 7th gear constantly. With wide ratio gearbox and few preventative fixes to ensure reliability, 690 would be perfect bike for me. So I'd like to check if somebody may have experience with that here.

I've now shortened the gearing on my 690. Pulls a lot better at low revs and still cruises at 130 with ease

I'm more worried about the short 5 and 6 than short 1 - I would use the bike more like rally bike for adventures, than technical climbing tool. For an odd Van Zyl pass ascent I can bring smaller sprocket.

The fact is IMO that wide ratio gearbox would give you the best of both worlds - short 1 for technical climbs and long 6 for much more relaxed cruising. For long distance I use to keep closer to 150 than 130.
