SA to Vic Falls to Malawi to Moz to SA
« on: October 03, 2015, 11:47:54 am »
My brother and I are planning an Africa trip, as per subject line above, for next year, and we need to know what is the best time of the year to do this trip.

We would also appreciate accommodation ideas on the Great Eastern Road between Lusaka and Chipata.

Also toying with the same idea for next year April, but we're planning on doing it counterclockwise.

Agreed - winter is best. Stay at Bridge Camp on the Great Eastern Road. Its where the road crosses the South Luangwa river and is about 1/3rd the distance between Lusaka and Chipata. Otherwise there's not much else.

Hope you will do a ride report afterwards, with lots of photos.  That way we will at least know what is waiting for us

The SA winter is the dry season in the areas you mention.
Temperatures and humidity are lower and there is no rain.
July to September is probably your best bet, could be stretched int October.
Also there are fewer mosquitos to bother you at night.

We were in that area in late May, early June.  Nice and dry, but getting colder especially on the return leg through SA .  Not a problem if you live in Scotland like we are...

Did the Chipata- Lusaka road, and as others have said, not much accommodation.  We stayed at Bridge Camp in a chalet, which was nice, but had a hellish evening with the couple that own it (especially the woman, she is one unhappy bunny).

Yep, we also stayed at Bridge Camp, with da happy bunny, and that was two years ago....

We came from Lusaka and went to Harare, but did not take the road via Chirundu (don't want to do that in the wet, don't know if they managed to finish the road works, but doubt that). Instead we went via Siavonga/Lake Kariba, well worth it. Customs was ok, but the oke from Interpol was trying very hard for tea money. Which he didn't get....

Enjoy, write RR and post pics.... :thumleft:

Drove up to vic falls end of june, to run the marathon there, and it was hot. So I would opt for winter time.

Done this trip twice.

The first was in 2004 August, totalling about 6800km over 10 days.  We stayed in Kusake and pushed all the way through to Mama Rula's next day.

Did it again in 2011 (also August) but with a slight deviation in Moz. Total distance was ~7300km which we did over 14 days.

Both were VERY VERY lekka trips!!!  :laughing4:

ISINYONI, how did you manage to do over 7000km in 14 days?, what did you avarage per day, we will be doing just over 5000km in 14 days and we will have a few days of 600-650km to do, which I am a bit concerned about
