Circumnavigated...
« on: October 09, 2015, 10:14:12 am »
Greetings from Mossel Bay

I am actually on Wilddog for the biking info but here is a link to my sailing adventure...

www.zephyr.co.za

I built my own boat and sailed her (Zephyr) around the globe.

Regards

Errol

Welkom is net die regte plek - bo en behalwe dat ek die gebruik van 'n hele engineurs werke gehaad het, is die weer idiaal vir veselglas werk en epoxy werk. Lekker droog en warm in die somer...

That's not a stupid question.... :bueller:

There are various options but in my case I 'rented' the molds (7 of them)

Most often (for a home-build), a boat builder will sell you 'hull, deck and bulkheads, and one takes it from there.

The original molds licencee had gone out of business so there was no problem - Angelo Lavranos gave me all sorts of help along the way as well.
He was from Cape Town, now living in New Zealand...

Cheers

Sounds like an amazing adventure!

I have a couple of questions just out of interest sake and always dreaming of doing something huge like this.

What kind of sailing experience did you have before the trip? Do you have to organise visas for the countries you visit beforehand?

Greetings

I sailed quite a lot on the Vaal dam and Hartbeespoort dam which is often more challenging than the ocean... 😄 because of wind shifts. Then I moved to Mossel Bay and did quite a lot of sailing in the bay and then 'around the corner' in the bigger stuff.

Besides Australia, USA and the UK, visas are issued on arrival, for 30 or 90 days and with very few exceptions, easily extended - this is part of international maritime law.

Cheers

Errol

What an adventure that must of been! I see in your pics in Vanuatu in Aug 2009, you mention my sister and brother in law, Lynne and Chris's boat , Malaika is her name. Did you spend any time together with them?

Greetings,

Yes I did ... !!!
We had a great time together. Interesting couple but sadly I heard that Lynne passed away from cancer - is that correct?
Lynne also introduced "Keife" to me which I grew for the rest of the trip !!!
(For those that don't know what "Keife" is, it is very similar to a yogurt culture which is "grown" in powdered milk. It makes "islands" which are scooped up and put into a glass jar and whipped into a yogurt. Delicious on it's own or over muesli etc.)

 It's a small world...

Wow, had a quick look at your circumnavigation and got some good bed time reading to do.
May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live
