.........bliksem!  and the memories come flooding back.

I was at Okatopi in `84 & `85 Radio Operator for Bravo Twee Vier (Bike Squad) if memory serves that was our call sign.

We had a couple of guys who also had the "gift of the wheelie" - most amazing was probably Johan Gray who could wheelie for days..............

Thanks Badger,
- Some people are like clouds, once they fuck-off it turns into a

Hey big pleasure Ortos. Our platoon(13) spent 84 in Owambo land.              Section 1 - Okatopi
Section 2 - Ugongo
Section 3 - Ruacana

We were the only Bikesquad up there in 84 and platoon 14 came up when we klaared out in December 84.

Capt. Barnard was the CO at Okatopi then. He is a legend.

Excellent pics Jeff!

Bet that was quite a thrill seeing them hey. I saw some of us racing in the sand at Tsintsabis that I didn't know existed, and wouldn't you know, I was on the "grid" ........may be on that FB page, but since I'm not on FB can't say fer sure.

Somewhere out there, and I think it's in Oz, are pics of me riding kaalgat in Angola......someone had tackled me while I was standing knee-deep in a dam fishing with hand grenades......I was soaked so wore only boots, helmet, webbing and R4 while my browns, tied to my bike, streamed behind like advertising banners....everybody was laughing at me, and an oke named Larry Inglis took photos, I know ....waiting for those to pop up somewhere  :laughing4:

Seems my memory is faulty, did only pl 13 go up in Nov 83? For some reason I remembered 13 and 14 together. I have often wished that I had gone with you .....I was invited, but only wanted out of PW's puss plaas at that stage :ricky:

We never saw Okatopi.....went straight to 52 and 53 Bn......and you're right, Barnard created lots of stir....he'd gotten his arse almost shot off  as a 2Lt by standing up during a swap attack on his TB...... never struck me as a future rocket surgeon :imaposer:

Hope you're well, will come visit again in Feb probably. Ps if you talk to Mike Deglon, pls ask him to email me? Can't seem to get hold of him.

Cheers boet.

Yuri

Howzit Yuri..... good hearing from you. :thumleft:

Those naked pics will surface someday and sounds like a Vietnam movie  :imaposer:
If I remember correctly there wasn't any overlap with platoon 13 and 14.

Give me a shout when you out again and all the best.

I remember watching Brain Capper win the SA national 450 Motard race at Killarney and on his slow down lap he jumped onto the seat in the final corner and pooped it all the way through the final bit of the corner and right down the main straight. And he waved at us when he went past as we were standing and cheering.

It is even more impressive to wheelie while standing because you are not covering the back brake, which is apparently the safety stop during a wheelie  :). I saw apparently because I have never been able to get that right i.e. stop myself flipping by pressing the back brake.

Its the same as the MotoGP boys who do stand up wheelies down the main straight, again, they are not covering the back brake so it takes some real skill and ballz.

Thanks lj111, it was very tough during our first years training but once we got to the border it relaxed a bit and we got down to doing what we were trained to do amongst trying to have some fun.

Warren Ellwood I don't use my back brake at all UNLESS I'm doing a very slow balance wheelie in 1st gear. With a 4 stroke your back mudguard can be scraping the ground and you close the throttle the engines compression will bring your front wheel down so fast you can pop your shocks.

I hear you about the bounce  :deal:

I have taught a few of my mates by putting them on the back with me and then explaining while I wheelie so they can see AND feel exactly what I'm doing..... I found this works the best
