Lesotho: Katse Dam wall to little bridge - 16km.
« on: November 03, 2015, 04:50:46 pm »
So while doing a route recce for an event we're having in December, we looked for a MTB route.

We camped just below the Katse dam wall, next to a beautiful river, green grass, wilger bome..very nice.

And we saw that there's a path going along the river. We checked on the GPS and saw it was about 16km downriver until you get to a low concrete bridge.

So we decided we had to check with the bikes if this would be a suitable route for the mountain bike route, come December.

Here's the link where I shared about the Suunto video competition we entered, and actually won.
http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=181640.msg3379628#msg3379628

So here's the route:

Lets just start with some of the beautiful mountain passes on the way to Katse dam.

There's the river we're going to ride along

Just next to the bridge below the Katse dam wall a little dirt road turns off

Our camping spot for the night

The bikes have arrived, a Suzuki DR650 and Honda XR650L

Starts with a singletrack

This should be MTB heaven:

The singletrack turns rocky

And the path is really tiny with big rocks everywhere

At this stage we realised we might have bitten off more than we can chew...but we kept on going

Trying different lines

Every once in a while a really easy, smooth grassy section

The MTB's will enjoy this

Waars die picnic mandjie nou?

Hi Yama, Awesome photos!!! Just what i am searching for. Heading that way in 2 weeks, me and hubby on bikes, with mates in 4x4. Looking for must see scenery preferably with roads reasonable enough for 4x4, as well as accommodation - not camping. Any recommendations?
Thanks
Lucy

Still feeling strong

Really rocky at the bottom..lets try this line higher up

And if you keep going you get this

Rocky rocky rocky

Semi wild horses

Ok, not so wild

These grass sections were really nice..a reward for getting through the rocky stuff

And then we get to this...I think we went right

Little guys cheering us on

Doing some morning stretches

Star jumps

Checking out a line

There's a route on the left..

Guys helping us make a clean line..rolling away rocks

Lets go

Made it

So after about 3 hours...we started getting hungry and thirsty..but..as this ride should have taken us an hour..we didn't pack much

But..really really beautiful there

We have to cross the river

Cows life

Spot the photo bomb..donkey style. Only spotted it afterwards, haha

Lots of little guys cheering us along

Preparing to cross..with a small crowd watching

I made it through

But the Honda's line was a bit tricky (rocks and slilipery) through the water and it fell over..So it struggled a bit to get going again

More water crossings

He was very lucky here..tried to ride through this patch..but it was thick mud..bike went from 30-0 in about 2 meters and he went over the handlebars..and the bike just stood still like this.

It took us about 30mins with the help of these gentleman to get the bike out

This next bit was tricky

If the river was a little bit higher..no ways

And we made it! Took us 6 hours..lots of falls..river crossings..mud...but lots of fun.

Then we hit some tar on the way to Tsaba Tseka

The DR is no superbike..but these roads were bliss

The other guys were going to recce a 35km trail run...so we headed with them to this road

They went a bit slower

This is where they started the trail run..at 16:00...they only finished at 01:00

And they're off

Next morning at Semonkong lodge...very nice..beautiful waterfall about 5km from here..nice hike along the river

So come December, we'll be about 20 friends doing a 6 day Traverse through Lesotho..MTB, running, kayaking, swimming..will finish at Semonkong hopefully in 1 piece.

Thats it,thanks for reading  :thumleft:

Hi Lucy

Thanks! It was my first time in Lesotho, so I can only recommend the places we've seen..was a very quick 2 days there.
I think Semonkong lodge should be ok..waterfall and abseil there.

But for the rest..I'm sure there's great places and routes..but don't know them yet  :thumleft:

O yes, very good trout fishing there. Some of the rivers have rainbow trout..the others brown trout.

There's a trout hatchery in Katse dam...and many of the little ones get out and populate the dam itself.

Very nice but challenging route.  :thumleft:

Thanks skydiver. Was quite challenging. I think a lighter bike would make it easier and of course more skill / confidence through the rocky sections.
