Could I have screwed with my cam timing?

I set the cam chain tensioner the other day. The manual says to start the bike and let it idle. Then loosen the two nuts/bolts on the right rear of the cylinder about 1,5 to 2 turns, then re-tighten. I did this.

Now the bike has very bad backfiring and spluttering when I close the throttle and run against compression. Like when I slow down or gear down to stop. I think I scared a few motorists shitless today.

Is it possible that the cam chain could have jumped a tooth?

The bike still starts first kick, idles perfectly, and pulls like a freight train.

Any ideas?
