Rockfox Rally Division Products.
« on: November 21, 2015, 11:47:32 am »
Hi Guys,

Heres the first look at the next generation of Rally products from the Rockfox Rally Division.

Parts have already been ordered and we will start assembly soon.

Navigation Tower

Made from 10mm Black HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene Plastic) and Stainless Steel. The tower attaches to the neck of the motorcycle with a stainless steel bracket, the brackets have a cut-out so as not to obscure the VIN number. This design was used on a 450 KTM and 450 Yamaha WR in 2015 Amageza.  The HDPE allows the tower to bend to a degree, absorbing the impact and vibrations from the motorcycle while being extremely durable. In the 2015 Amageza my father had a few offs, one of which was strong enough to bend the screws attaching the screen to the tower but with no damage to the tower itself or any other parts.

Specs:   Lightweight yet durable HDPE Construction with excellent Shock absorption.
Allows for fitment of various lights with simple brackets.
           Adjustable TRIP/CAP Roadbook holder plate.
Optional almost unbreakable clear Lexan Screen.
Can be supplied with complete wiring loom and fuse box for all navigation items.

TRIP/CAP Roadbook holder Plate

Specs:   Made from 3mm Aluminium with integrated rear bracing and angle adjustment slots no struts or stays required.
Standard mounting holes for ICO / RNS / F2R Roadbook holder and Rockfox Navigation equipment.
Direct fit to the Rockfox Rally Tower.
Adapters available to mount on Highway Dirtbike Rally Lite or Universal handlebar navigation clamp.
Pre-drilled holes for switch and speedo bracket. Bracket available separately.

Roadbook Holder

The first units performed very well during the 2015 Amageza Rally.

Specs:   At only 730g and 203x125x80mm including knobs it is the lightest and smallest roadbook holder on the market but still
has capacity for a 48mm thick roll of roadbook paper.
Water and dust resistant asymmetrical cover allows for the easy access to drive belts.
Backlight and paper guides to prevent scratching of screen included as standard items.
Matt Black anodised, complete with rubber mounting grommets, 8mm connectors and compatible with F2R handlebar
                switch.

Trip-CAP unit

These units are now upgraded with more robust switches, GPS connector and better power regulation.

Specs:   New slim 24mm high housing for base unit with sleek tactile buttons.  Internal GPS now only add an extra 5mm to the
                height.
Improved software with simpler menu and quicker reset for multiple roadbooks per day.
The unique design where one unit can be configured as Trip, CAP or both (internal GPS and wheel sensor) is retained for
ultimate redundancy. The function of the status LEDs is simplified.  The unit can now also be fitted with an external GPS
areal via the wheel sensor cable.
New 20mm wide three button switch pod.  Two units can fit flush against one another.
Power, wheel and switch pod plugs now compatible with RNS and ICO units.

Hi All,

Today we started assembly on our Roadbook Holders. New CNC Machined parts were installed, after refinements were made from the models that we used on the 2015 Amageza.

We even had a chance to test out our new Electro-plating setup and I must say the pieces turned out awesome. Monday as soon as my suppliers open up we will order the last few remaining parts for the handle bar switch.

Currently the switch is still the standard toggle, but we are looking at doing a full redesign on it and giving it that unique Rockfox twist.

We will keep you guys up to date on all the happenings.

Cheers For now.

PS. The 3d printer has been running all day doing various little bits and pieces for some of our designs, and i had this in the mix as well. Just because we love bikes.

Good point - are the towers designed to be fitted through drilling and tapping for bolts, can they be clamped? Or do they need welded bracket plates?

Hi Grolls, and Big Dom

Currently the brackets are bolt on. You need to drill 5 holes in the neck of the motorcycle to fix the brackets, but no tapping needed. The do have a cutout on the one edge to clear the VIN Number. Brackets are made from 3mm Stainless Steel

We went the bolt on route for a few reasons.
1. Not every body has a welder but most people have drills, or at least a friend with one.
2. If its welded you limit your options to go back to standard with the bike, it might get in the way of your lights or things like that.
3. Welding can warp the neck where the bearings sit, making them harder to get in or out.
4. Drilling the 5 small holes doesn't affect the structural strength of the neck
5. its easier.

We are designing a clamp on tower as well, we are planning it to bolt on to the forks, making it almost universal to any motorcycle. if you clamp onto the neck of the motorcycle you need to be make and model specific. A lot more work and then if you decide to upgrade your bike you can just move the part over.

As my suppliers opened up today I will get everything ready and have the first towers sorted by end JAN. But will keep you all in the loop via this thread.

Impressive!

I guess the low value of the Rand is at least good for some local development, well done!!

That sounds good
I am just wondering whether or no to carry on with my rally lite or to consider your tower??

Some progress.

First batch of instruments off the 'production bench'.  We are quite pleased with the buttons as that was the biggest flaw with V1.

Current status.
1. The software is MUCH simpler but more powerfull than before.  We will do an upgrade during this week to make even simpler to use but retain all the functionality.

2. The electronics.  this time we do not have any issues with the electronics.  We shrunk everything and cleaned up the layout.  the unit can now be assembled within a hour (took 4 hours with V1  ???)

3. Housing etc. We still have some quality (looks) issues with the housing and screen.  Mostly material incompatibilities.

4. The LED'd are a bit bright due to the 'decal' not as opague at the prev batch.  Need to work on that.  >:(

The unit now weigh less than the competition, is smaller and still the best user interface.

The unit to the right is the CAP repeater with the GPS built in.

cheers
Adie
