Hi Bill,

Are you planning on doing the Amageza/other with the CRFX? Give us a bit of a comparison if you don't mind between the 450X and the 690 for that specific application (if that is your intention off course).

I have done Ama previously on a 690 and now own a 450X, which I might use if I do enter the Ama again. It would be interesting to hear what you think.

They are quite popular in Aus for the Safari, which I guess is fairly similar.

Cheers

I told him I'll take it, but I could not make any further contact with seller.

That or eBay.  I'll make a decision later today, see next post.

Just stay away from http://www.crfsonly.com/. In my mind, I built up a CRF that would cost more than a brand new 1290  :lol8:

Hi Motties

I'm not doing Amageza proper for the next couple of years.  I'm helping Alex to pre-run the roadbooks for the Baja and the rallye.

I actual bought the 450x for a rental unit.  I am a partner in a off-road touring and rental start-up (we use DR650s for that).  The idea was the rent out a couple a rallye bikes as well.  However, the numbers are not really supporting that.  My 690 cost about R200k to build and the set-up is for somebody double Dwerg's size.

The 1st obstacle in the way of the CRF was getting it licensed.  The reg cert says OFF ROAD.  However, it passed roadworthy yesterday, so today is D-Day to see if I can bullshit my way into a license disk.

Until that is in place, I do not actually know how I will set it up.  If the disk is approved, it becomes a rallye bike with a front and rear tank but without a fairing.  If not, it becomes a Baja 1000 replica with a 12l front tank only and I strip out the road worthy harness and ancillaries and sell it.

I have taken it once around my test track and then I parked it.  It needs suspension work before I can run it close to any decent pace.  I'll strip it out tonight and send it to Superfoxi before Friday.

It feels long, heavy and slow turning, unlike any of my KTMs.  That is good, as I had to remove the progressive damper to fit the roadworthy stuff  ;D

So, it got licensed today, therefore it will become a rallye beast. The question:  I had to remove the PSD to get the harness to fit behind the light.  I'm assuming I would want to have a damper.  Can anybody give me a source for a Scotts mounting bracket?  And can I sell the OEM progressive damper? Do they have value?

Thanks for the reply and good news on the license. The crf in my opinion does not need a damper nearly as desperately as any ktm that I have owned.

Thanks Motties, since I generally have between 2 and 3 KTMs most of time, I have enough dampers to go around, so I just need to buy a mount/pillar.  However, if its not needed, that's real good news.

Suspension was sent out to Superfoxi for a service and new heavy springs.  While it was out, I decided to re-grease the steering stem bearings.  So, I found out why the 450X was so stable that I thought it could work without a steering damper:  top bearing rusted solid.

While waiting for the suspension to come (courier picked it up last week, but I'll only get it on the 28th), I replaced the steering bearings.

Also fitted some wider footpegs:

I like the steel DRC pegs.  I'm heavier than most dirt bikes, so I don't like most of the cheaper aluminium pegs, I'm sure I can break them.  I've used the steel DRCs on my KTM 300 for 4 years (I moved them from my previous KTM 250) so I trust their strength.

Hopefully today I'll straighten the left radiator.  It is just stupidly hot in Upington again today.

Went for a 80% solution just to enable the shrouds to fit without strain.

This coming week I should get the re-worked suspension and the fuel tank.

Hi

I have a long range Ali tank if you are interested - generally I don't sell but if it is for a race bike - maybe we can talk. I am in Australia until 10 Jan 2016 - you can call me if interested when I am back on 0825513263

Will you sell the stock pegs ? Been looking for ages for a set to mount to my XT660Z (with some mods)
