Our featured pass this week is one almost everyone has driven/ridden at some stage in their lives. In our weekly feature this week we dig deep into the history of this great, but statistically dangerous pass and show you some options to look for the next time you pass through.

Take a trip down memory lane to 1948 (when some of us had already been born!) as South African engineers applied their minds as how to build a bridge that was both curved and banked. As the Old Cape Road (or 7 Passes Road as it is better known) fell into disuse during 1952 when the N2 hit the spotlight, the Kaaimans River Pass started building a deadly tally of fatalities. The combination of narrow roads, sharp corners and momentum inducing gradients had trucks thundering off the road and down into the ravine on a regular basis. We've come a long way since 1952 but the line of the pass remains faithful to the original.

Modern engineering has improved the safety of the road (which includes three 'traffic calming' camera traps strategically placed before dangerous sections). Join us as we dig around into the darkest corners of the ravines and go paragliding at Dolphin Point and check out an 800 year old Groot Boom.
