'07 DR650SE - What is it worth?
« on: December 02, 2015, 12:06:51 pm »
My wifes '07 DR650SE has been standing for a while now and after the three day trip this past weekend she has now confirmed she wants to sell it.

So my question is, what is it worth?
I have some idea what it is worth but would like to have some feedback to make sure I'm not smoking something.

9 year old bike worth R50,000 new should be around R20,000.

Not so sure, Ian.
I searched for a whole year to find mine, and paid R30000 for a bike that needed a lot of work.
DR's are becoming scarce.

R 40k to R 45k.

I reckon year model on DRs (post 1996) is unimportant.

Kms, condition and farkles determine the price.

I owned 4. Still have one. Sold my '99 in Dec for R 30k, which was a good price for the buyer.

~14000 km: Low mileage, that's a plus.
PSP Bash plate: Better than nothing for sure.
PSP carry plate: Worth zip
Trailtech Vapour dashboard: What happened to the OEM speedo? If you stiil have it put it back. Maybe not if it was a grey import.
Pro Taper handle bars: Positive as long as it's not an ATV Hi. If it is stop replacing good advice with Google. And throw the bars away.
Acerbis handguards: Personal preference. But nothing that really increases the value of a bike. I prefer the Polisport as in Chopperpilot's picture.
Kappa Wind shield: Why on earth?
Airtime footpegs: Would be the first quality item from AirTime (?) I don't know them and hope they are better than the slightly flimsy stock pegs.
Heidenau k60 tyres: I would not want them not if you pay me. But then there are people who only want mileage regardless of grip on tar.
New battery: Which one? OEM Yuasa +++ as well as MotoBatt. All others ---

Annotations made above.

The biggest minus IMHO is the TrailTech Vapour which IMHO is no more than a cheap piece of electronic thrash. And the screen ::) An after market speedo also is a bit of a problem looking at the credibility of the claimed mileage. Unless you still have the OEM.

I personally would not pay much over R30k but I do agree you will be able to get a lot more. I think R37k should be fairly easy. More if you're lucky. Pretty good for a nine year old bike which sold new for R48k. Car owners weep your eyes out!

Reading through this thread and realizing most DR's I see nowadays are listed between R50k and R60k.
So much to do, so little time. Better get going then!

@Spectaitor .... what people list their DR650ís for, and what they actually get, are poles apart. And as LeCap points out ( and he really knows) farkles very rarely improve the monetary value of a bike.

To get real , I know of at least 6 DRís  of fair to good condition with mileage of below 50, 000ks, which in the last 18 months finally sold for between 25 and 35 k. And that is probably even more the case right now when there is a glut of thumpers on the market ....

A lot of people think that by spending R20k changing a bike it adds R20k to it's value, pity. I'm also seeing a lot of XR650L's recently too, at around the same price as the DR's although, there are 3 Honda's for every single DR. Were they sold at the same price point?

I think of the 650 thumpers available then, BMWís and Hondas were always the most expensive, but they did have better suspension. DRís were the cheapest. Time has shown that DRís and KLR Ďs have the best overall longevity, with DRís the strongest sub-frame and ease of maintenance...

With farkling of DRís you have to have a long-term relationship in mind, otherwise you will lose money if you sell, unless you are lucky to have a willing buyer at the right time. IMO...

It would be interesting to get someone like @edgy to give an opinion, as he has had all 4 brands at some stage...

Don't know why but I never liked the 650L, it's very tall always had sub frame concerns. Heard of some oil usage as well, always played second fiddle to the XR600R and XR650R (yes I know they were different type of bikes). For me it would be DR all the way !

Lets see a picture, but yip with that low mileage in very nice condition I reckon 40k is not unrealistic at all :thumleft:

With all thumpers going the way of the dodo they are getting more and more scarce.

Nice low mileage examples will pull in $$$ when selling.

Farkles do add to the price - they do not add Rand for Rand to the price but it does make the bike more valuable to a point.
Naturally if the market is full of bikes prices go down.

High mileage pulls the price down again - lets face it most thumpers require some rebuild or major maintenance when the kilos get towards 80 000km so a bike with 50 000km on the clock will be worth a lot less than a bike with 12 000km on the clock.

PS: I'm not counting the 690 and 701 in this list as they are very expensive and still available new

Both the DR and the XRl are brilliant bikes -

Sidetrack, the DR is oil and air cooled which means it will run cooler and use less oil than the XR.
The fix on the XR subframe is quick and easy
You can't compare the L and the R - one is a racing machine and one an agricultural bike that will last forever.
Had 6 DR's and 16 XR's - Never had any issues with any of them. If I had to choose, it would have to be the XR - just because of the fork travel and height. I am 1,96m though
