As the year draws to a close, we look to feature something truly worthwhile in our weekly news bulletin. Who better to take centre stage than Thomas Bain. The 68 km long Prince Alfred's Pass is the longest in South Africa and contains in excess of 400 corners, climbing through 800 vertical metres.

As spectacular and varied as the scenery is, it's juxtaposed with some poor road surfaces - in particular along the section from Buffelsnek to Knysna. There are always potholes, ruts, mud, washaways, loose rocks and corrugations to contend with on this pass and depending on the time of year, this could affect your travelling time. We have just given the page a facelift and added some new video material with 8 videos covering not only the driving, but some of the things to see and do. Names like Tata Riet se gat and Tiekieliefiedraai conjure up a bygone era of pick, shovel and gunpowder - where prisoners paid their debt to society in the form of hard labour.

If you have never ridden this road before, it is seriously enjoyable, but don't ride it if you're in a hurry. Allow at least two hours, excluding any stops.
