Thanks for the comments. Glad you're enjoying the report.  :thumleft:

I think the video sums it all up but I'd still like to share some last thoughts and pictures.

By now Shaun Jones doesn't need an introduction. Though he rode closely in front of me for much of the race
I would never have met Shaun wasn't it for the events that unfolded on the last day. Shaun fell badly and tore
some ligaments in his knee. The rest is obvious from the video. Remarkably Shaun pulled through and finished
in the same ranking despite this drawback. At the finish I asked for a picture to remember the ride we shared
and was taken by surprised when he put his arm round my neck. Such spontaneous display of, gratitude I suppose,
will stay etched into my memory forever.

You know, as specially from those who are looking to also undertake such an adventure in future, a good question
at this point would be what the cost of it all adds up to. I would say it depends on how accurate and involved you
choose to make the equation. A rough estimate from my experience, including riding the initial Qualifier event,
comes to around R15 000. This now includes entry fees, accommodation, bike prep and fuel ex.

The truth is that my Roof experience was priceless. The Mandelas I had to put down fades away into nothing more
than small change compared to the rich experience it bought me.

Congrats Michiel - very well done! You going to be back next year? Silver? Was Bronze the right choice, or with your technical skills and time spent in the mountains do you think you could have gone straight for silver?

Just watched the video Michiel. Awesome! I agree with your sentiments regarding 300cc 2 strokes. For this type of riding, they are just unbeatable IMO.

Thanks! Losper should never have let me ride the Roof... I'm one of those people who can't get enough
of a good thing. Hell yes! I'm definitely going to ride again. It was just too good to do just one time.

Regarding Bronze, it was absolutely the right decision to ride Bronze Class for my first Roof attempt.
I didn't want to prove anything, I just wanted to have fun and finish the route set out for me whilst having
time along the way to enjoy the scenery, smell the flowers and chat to the people I come across. Remember,
the weather always have the last say. I/we had it easy this year because the weather was mostly favorable.
Slightly hot and very dry but nothing serious. If it was raining I would have had my hands full, in fact, I/we
would have kakked off BIG time! When the dark soils of Lesotho gets wet it becomes so slippery even an gentle
incline can become near impossible to ride up and off-camber stuff... I don't even want to think about it!

For someone that rides very well (as specially the youngsters that have endless energy and no idea that they
can get hurt) and actively participate in other similar events throughout the year it might be worth jumping
straight to Silver.

Having said that, this year I would like to try my hand at riding Silver Class. It seems the next logical step.
I feel like I might have a chance in finishing it if all goes well. If it rains... well, then it will be the adventure
of a lifetime and I will make many more friends! I might be the one hugging people at the finish. How awesome
would that be?  :)

What is your tyre choice as a matter of interest? Tubliss/mousses/tubes?

This question normally sparks a thousand opinions. I have settled with what I think is the best solution for Extreme Enduro. (mostly slow technical riding)
It works so well for me (value for money, performance, lifespan, reliability) that I'm not even interested in anything else.

Mitas EF07 130/80-18 single green stripe with Michelin Bib Mousse 120/90-18 inside for the rear wheel and Mitas yellow stripe
with Bib Mousse for the front. The 120 Bib Mousse inside the 130 Mitas works perfect! Not too loose, not too firm. Masses of
grip right from the start yet long lifespan. I'm at 120 hours on the rear mousse and still going strong.

I made a terrible mistake... Just spoke to Hannes and realized I had it all wrong. Each year Hannes rides the Roof and
each year misfortune plagues him. He doesn't let that put him off though and keeps on going back for more, bless him!

I wrote earlier that this year Hannes had better fortune, turns out this happy face and thumbs-up was only a facade.

Same as Andries, Hannes also had chain derail problems. He lost more than an hour on the first Race Day when it came
off twice and jammed up so badly he had to dismantle the clutch slave cylinder and remove the front sprocket. This was
because the chain block got damaged and acted as a derailleur rather than guide. Because of this loss in race time Hannes
ended up time-barred 25km before the finish on the second Race Day and never saw the checkered flag...

Hannes told me he will be back this year!!!  :thumleft:

Fantastic RR!

But, how did you manage without goggles?! I would have thought it would be a rule that all riders must wear goggles.

I think the rules do say no visor Ö but that may be the rally rules? I know they were saying no to Adv helmets for Amageza. Goggles can be a bitch for guys who wear glasses.
