Dawid Kramer - Royal Hotel
« on: December 20, 2015, 09:05:19 pm »
I am in the process of planning a ride that will take in a big part of South Africa, specifically Cape Town.

As part of the ride, I would like to visit the Royal Hotel. Now there are many Royal Hotels in South Africa, but I am looking for the one that Kramer sang about in his famous song.

Can anyone tell me which Royal Hotel this was?
Thanks.

Some 4 or 5 years ago Firecoast suggested that we do a Royal Hotel tour, where we visit all of the fine old establishments.

Sadly, it is something that is dwindling.....there used to be so many!
Even Stellenbosch had one when I was a kid, now there is a shopping centre where it used to be.
The water wheel that was in the garden ended up at Stellenbosch museum, just lying in the backyard.

I think Kramer's was a generic one, most of his songs were about Montagu, Heidelberg, Barrydale area?

I know his brother John well.  They grew up in Worcester so I suspect that Royal Hotel had an influence on the song.  I also doubt if there still is a Royal Hotel in Worcester these days.

Enige gebou ouer as 50 jaar is n nationale monument, selfs n gewone huis. Vra my, ek is n Draughtsperson (SACAP).

Some feedback from Dawid:

Dear Jurie,

Yes, you are correct in thinking that the Royal Hotel was based on a few plattelandse hotels that were around in those days.

When I was a teenager there was one in Hermanus which I knew quite well and it was demolished sometime in the 1970s. It was this hotel that I was thinking about when the idea: “hier sit die manne in die Royal Hotel” popped into my head.
My early drinking experiences were in Worcester: The Brandwag Hotel (gone) and The Cumberland (still there) but quite different. The Cumberland at one time had a David Kramer bar. Don’t know if that’s still the case.

The Royal Hotel appears on the Story of Blokkies Joubert concept album and this time it’s the Beaufort West Royal.

The song was meant to conjure up memories of any platteland hotels, and the Royal Hotel seemed like a good choice.

Hope you have an interesting trip and find some typical old hotels.

Best wishes
David Kramer

It seems like I'll just have to visit one of those hotels then. Will see if the route I take will take me past or close to Beaufort West.

I can remember the Royal Hotel in Hermanus. Can remember the entrance and then walking down the passage towards the back of Hotel where the bar was. My father have many a story of things happened/he had in that bar/hotel.
I do remember the burnt down Royal hotel very wel. Was a sad sight to see. Stood like that for some time before they demolished the remains. Not long after that the old movie house also burnt down.

As kids we mostly went to the Cafe next to the Royal hotel (The Royal cafe) to have milkshakes and sweeties. There was two old lady's that worked in the shop. The one wore a wig. This wig was so obvious it was very funny. It looked like the hair was gelled in a permanent position so she never needed to brush it or clean it for that matter.  Well this was the perception/memory I have as a small kid. Funny how I remember that to stand out as a memory of the shop. This shop building still remains today but altered a lot.

Some info on the town for those that might be interested. The pics you se my forefathers where part of. My family history go way back in Hermanus.

http://www.ratepayers.co.za/historic-hermanus.html

I would love to join a tour of the old places. Sounds awesome. What would be great if there could be someone that could tell stories of each place that gets visited.
