Silvain Espinasse has finished the 2016 Dakar Rally on a 125! An epic achievement.

Anyone know how many rebuilds, and did he do malle moto or did he have a support crew?

Support. Not sure about the engine but am guessing a good couple of pistons and rings, if not like daily  :3some:

Those engines are reliable! I would not be surprised if he only changed the top end on resting  day.

Looking at the videos he rode it like 125 begs to be riden. Flatout high revs.

That is very cool :thumleft:

Was also very happy to see that Husky got a podium finish in its first year.

Yes in theory but really as we know it is a 100% a white KTM. Lets hope going forward they develop their own bikes that will impact.

Got this from ADV

"According to the service team, they used 4 pistons (ie. a piston every 3rd day) and had an engine change at rest-day..."

I agree. Lots of people think that 2strokes eat topends like droewors. They rev "far lower" than some of the 4strokers !
Maybe Sylvian took the penalty (maybe) for removing the head to get to the piston , etc.

I think there is only a penalty for engine change - I feel sure piston and rings could be considered service items. I know the highlights showed Gonks bike at the Marathon bivvy after his radiator issue with the head off … some reports said he swopped piston with Metge … Honda said that in the end there was in fact no damage?? Anyway there was no penalty as far as I know?

I think in the 80s, a dt125 and xl125 also finished the Dakar
