We have gone from tiny shops selling bikes and cars to giant lifestyle centers which no one actually gives a shit about.  That costs money.  No one wants to only live comfortably running a small bike shop, they want mansions, boats and SUV's.  No one wants to actually do any work any more, so staff have to be employed.  All this costs money.  We pay for it with these crazy markups.  This is not about someone doing a service.  This is about getting ripped off big time.

As I posted right in the beginning of this thread - which it seems everyone read around - there are still cheaper ways than the agents.  I always share what I learn, because ours is an expensive hobby.

Obviously there are, sometimes, cheaper ways than the some dealers.  This means we can use them to get around expensive part prices.  It however does not mean we won't complain about the expensive dealers..

Jeez....

If the Agent / Dealer / Stealer pays the Rand / US$ exchange rate import price, and stocks the part, then we say he is ripping us off.

If he decides fuggit, he's not going to pay R1000 for an air filter he may never sell, then we crucify him because he never has any stock and we wait months for a simple part.

eish.... I'm glad I'm not a dealer in these tough economic times.

Exactly!  Human beings are very hard to please.

Thats the big issue.
But...maybe it forces us into manufacturing our own localy produced stuff.
We certainly have the skills in RSA for that.

Sadly, as often seen (with exceptions of course) locally produced stuff prices close to imported.

Economies of scale and development costs obviously play a role in some of these cases.

@katana, just buy all your stuff from Runner, remember to ask for WD discount.

I have 2007 R1200RT in my shop at the moment that took a tumble.

Just the parts alone to repair it come to R230 488.00.

Motor (and bike) companies have admitted that they price replacement parts to encourage new sales. With a new vehicle today, you drive/ride it till the warranty expires and then replace it. It becomes too expensive to maintain a modern vehicle from your own pocket.

Real money is made from running a breaker's yard; especially if you can get an 'in' with an insurance company.

I often wonder what it would cost to build a bike/car from scratch using only new OEM parts. Could make money by buying new bikes and parting it out for spares.  :pot:

The Sum. has been made a few times.   Much,  much more than buying the complete car.

You will however make no money,  actually loose money,  if you buy new bikes to part out for spares.
