Hmm I see Barreda is now only 25 minutes away from 3rd position in the overall standings!

But anything can still happen....

It's 15 minutes Alan.

And today he pulled 17 minutes on Sunderland, opening the whole way. That included the touristy sightseeing a bit at the beginning of the stage which cost him about 7 minutes..

This navigational Dakar is just so much more fun than the WRC this thing used to be for past few years. Even with leads that would in prior years meant clear position baring technical breakdown, the results are wide open. And I guess even opening is not such a big disadvanatage - people are so worried to to be lead of the right track that they double checking everything in roadbook and don't just blindly follow the leader.

Of course I am.

Though I'm half Czech and half Slovak and Svitko is still higher at #11. Still far cry from last year unfortunately. Without that stupid refueling mistake he would be now 5th, 10 minutes off podium. And if tomorrow is going to continue to be proper navigation, anything could have happened. But that's water under the bridge I guess.

That's terrible. :( Hope he is okay. Fatigue might have kicked in. It is surprisingly easy to fall asleep on a bike. I remember on SS12 in 2013 a guy was killed when he rode into an oncoming police car.

Vincent Crosbie is in at 36th place.  Pretty impressive.

Metge just got an hour penalty - not sure for what. So he moves downwards and today's winner is BB, Svitko second. Also everybody who was behind him less than hour in OC is moving one spot up.

Truly hectic stage.  Feel especially sorry for the guy struck by Peterhansel.  If Peterhansel wasn't a biker in his previous life I would be seriously pissed with him - guess it was an unfortunate incident.  Maybe xtra sad because the biker was in the mallemoto class and already kakking off enough before having his leg almost ripped off by some insane fast going car on same route.

Based on his FB page, Svitko was just exhausted and is getting IV drip to be able to ride remaining 50 km to the bivouac.

bike/audio 016 - MATTHIAS WALKNER

“If I finish on the podium it would be really good”

“Everybody got lost around after 40 km and then I saw Sam and he also didn't know where we had to go. But in the end, he did a pretty good job all day in front. I think my day was also not so bad because I tried to not make so many mistakes again and in the end it was good. At the moment it's not so bad but there are still two more days to go and there's around 350 km. Many things can happen like a small crash. We saw today how quickly it could change, so we will try to be focused until the end. We will give it our best and keep pushing, because that is the way I like and that is the way that works for me. If you try to slow down, you lose concentration. I'll just keep pushing until the end and we'll see what's going on. Normally I don't believe I'll win because Sam is pretty strong. If he wins, it's just fair. But if I finish healthy and on the podium then it would be really good for me".

bike/audio 011 - JOAN BARREDA BORT

“It was really difficult”

“At the beginning, the first part with the rocky river beds and tricky navigation was amazing, a lot of kilometres always looking at the map and for the direction. It was really difficult. You had to change all the time in different directions in one note, so it was really difficult. I had a problem after about 90 kilometres with Mika, but then we rode together and we found the right way. After that I pushed on in front on the last part with the Baja style bumps. It was amazing - really good fun. For me, there was nothing to lose after my mistake and penalty of one hour. I would have liked to have more opportunities with more stages, like on stage five or stage nine, but it's like that - there was a disaster. We will try to keep focused and to push it all over the last kilometres”.
