2012 KTM990S or 2013 Super Tenere?
« on: March 14, 2016, 12:43:38 pm »
I guys,
I need serious help...
I can get a 2012 KTM990S (36000km) or 2013 Super Tenere (40000km) for roughly 100k. The KTM has a few extras like crash bars, luggage racks and aftermarket pipes, and the Tenere has higher screen, crash bars and Trax panniers. KTM is at a dealer and Tenere private sale.
My problem is this...I really want a KTM990, but then I saw the Tenere that looks like a good buy.
Which one would you pick and why?

I think that the extra 40-50kgs that the Tenere weighs should made up your mind.
The older I get, the earlier it gets late

Big Red, both are great bikes that I have ridden properly in the past. 100000km's plus on 990's and around 2000km on the Super Ten in Swaziland  during the SA launch of the bike. Both are more than up to the task of what any rider could honestly ask of a big Adv bike but there are differences or areas in which each are better suited to.
Super Tenere- Very comfortable, like the most comfortable dual sport I've ever ridden. Great suspension for a standard bike. Feels lighter than what the figures suggest. Handles superbly on the dirt and like a superbike on the tar. Awesome for a passenger. Thrives on open trails.
990 ADV- Comfortable, if you ride a lot and are fit. You will not find a more forgiving or entertaining ADV bike. If you like riding like your avatar suggests, this is the one for you. If you enjoy singletrack, Jeep track, rocks, gravel passes, tar passes Motocross tracks, trackdays and anything else exciting, this is the bike for you. It can and will do everything the Tenere will but just a bit better, excluding touring. But that's like saying you'd rather travel in your Bentley as opposed to your Ferrari as it's more comfortable.
I'd say stick with the one you love and you won't be sorry. If you chose the Yammie, you may, no sorry, WILL wonder what you are missing and eventually land up buying a 990 to satisfy that curiosity. I can't see it going the other way...
Hope this helps.
Got to take the time to do the things you wouldn't normally do.

The last 990S's were produced in 2008. I guess you are refering to a standard 990 Adventure.
The Yammie is heavier and has less power I believe, this does not make the KTM a better bike automatically.
If you prefer a more aggresive ride, especially on dirt then go for the KTM.
A more gentlemanly ride, like a GS, then go for the Yammie.
May the bridges I burn light the way...

Thanks you guys, you helped allot.
I'll probably use it more on road then off, but I think ill rather have the KTM for that one days offroad. (not really 1 day, but you know what I mean). The plan is to start taking on tours before I get to old, or move on to the next world, whichever comes first. Always wanted one, so ill go with what I want, otherwise as you said, ill always want to go 990 :thumleft:
GS I don't want...every Tom, Dick nd Harry has one  :pot:

Just need to point out that the blue KTM's are the fastest, just ask JK to confirm.

Buy the 990 you will not be disappointed.

I'll do that :thumleft:
I'm from a offroad background, had quads, scramblers, offroad bikes and still have XR650L (which I'll probably never sell). I just want to go further and moerse technical at the same time. You are all correct...990 is the only one that can do that.

Hi I had both.. All depend what you going to do with the bike more tar Yamie more off Ktm. Parts on Ktm more. Yami low and heavy but a brilliant bike. Yami more comfortable and for dirt roads really a bike that make you smile good suspension and brakes. Ktm more for off road but on tar not as comfortable. The Yami you can do dog bones and lift the bike up. Have to say between the two suspension on Yami was better had less tank slappers on same conditions.
