WC BASH SKURWEBERG 2016
« on: March 22, 2016, 02:58:01 pm »
WC BASH 2016 – Skurweberg

Let me start off by saying I am / was contemplating selling my HP and have been playing with the idea for some time now.  Hence this trip was / might be the last on the bike.

Enough of that lets get to the real stuff.

I left Colesberg Friday morning around 7:30 and made my way to Hanover.  I was thinking of joining up with the Gauteng gang but they were “rustig” when I phoned them the night before hence I decided go it alone the morning when I left.

We had some rain the day before and autumn was moving in, a welcome break from the scorching heat the previous couple of days.

I hit tar till Hanover and took a sub route to Richmond – what a find.   Due to the rain there were water in the driffies and on all the inside corners.  It was a combination of motocross and touring – I loved it.   :drif:

At Ricmond the garage was overrun by guys going to the Buff.  The one guy tougher than the other and talking to the petrol attendants as if they were still in the old South Africa.  :patch: :patch:
People in general must see bikers in that way – and the crowd there was not helping.
After I filled up at Richmond I set of to Vic West.  I have done this route a couple of times and it remains a gem.  :ricky:
The “lopie” at the fort had some water this time.  In general despite the water here and there you could see it was dry and grazing scarce.

After filling up in Vic and talking bike to the garage owner (Tribes help with a name please), whom I met when we went to the Verneukpan gathering I pushed for Loxton.  As I turned the tar heading for Loxton I wondered If I would again see a tortoise as I have NEVER passed that way without doing so.  Was not long before I found one of the biggest ones I have ever seen.

In Loxton I filled up and asked the church grounds keeper where the Ds. Stayed.  She is married to my brother’s best man asn I wanted to rub in some salt for being able to visit with them.  Apparently Loxton has now become quite a hub for Afrikaans movies.  ;)  I have often heard of the Rooi Granaat as well and as always said to myself “maybe next time you can have a meal there”.  I left heading for Fraserburg.

Fraserburg has a special place in my heart for no other reason as it always seems to be a clean town.  The domino players as the garage seem to never go home as I have always found them playing there.   :laughing4:

The toll these roads take on tyres.

By now I was HUNGRY and could smell a steak with my name on it at Jupiter.  I was enjoying the HP as never before, it seemed to take corners as if they were not there – “what are you thinking selling this machine?” ran through my head at a couple of corners. ;D

I filled up at Sutherland and went to have a cup of sawwe lyf with a proper piece of meat.

IMG_4371 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

I made arrangements with the barkeep to hold me some fuel for Sunday.  I left thinking that by now most of the Cape town gang were at the site already.

Got there NOBODY – the “race” to the WC BASH was won by a Northern Caper. :imaposer:

IMG_4375 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

I set up camp and wasn’t long before guys started pitching.

Always nice seeing old acquaintances.  :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
The venue was spectacular.  As soon as the sun set you could feel this was not home – it had a bite to the evening air already.  Soon the fire was lit and the kuier and jokes started while everyone prepared their meals.  I set of for bed on a full stomach and laying there contemplated what I needed from an adventure bike.  ;)
This would turn out to be the topic that haunted me the whole weekend.   I would guess we were less than half of the group that stayed the Friday night.

Saturday I thought would be spent lazing about but Operator mentioned they (William and Antonie, and himself) wanted to head to Midelpos and up to Gannaga Lodge so I joined them.  We filled up in Sutherland and got some refreshments for the store.  While waiting for the rest I saw an old omie walking – no waaaaaaalking” across the road.  Hat on blazer buttoned up and having his day out in Sutherland.  I could not but think how fortunate we are  :-\  :lamer: – I took a picture paid my model for the “right” and off we went to Middelpos.

That road has now become &^%^&*.  Sorry but I hate that nothing is being done to “main” roads.  >:(  At Middelpos we found THE STEED from Loeries and had a nice quick chat.  :lamer: :lamer:

IMG_4392 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

Chris he was there with his bakkie so you are more than welcome next time.  Operator has a client at Gannaga Lodge so we made for it.

What a NICE place we had a meal while Op’s was doing his “operating”.  :deal:  We decided to go Gannaga and then ride up Ouberg heading back to camp.  This just stays a wonderfull sight to see doesn’t matter how many times you look over that plato.

We made good time but I soon realized the quick trip was turning into an expedition for the day.  :imaposer:

Close to Ouberg I suggested we make a route change via Bo and Onder Wadrift.  I wanted to do the river bed again.  :pot: :pot: :peepwall:

Before long we were at Ouberg and stopped for some Pictures.

We headed back to camp and got there probably only after 16:00having done only 320km for the day, but WHAT a day.
By now the camp was full and we did the normal rounds and having a nice get to know each other.

What always strikes me at these get-togethers is how soon people mingle despite not knowing each other.  During one of these “circle” standing chats I eventually met Vaalbaas as for some reason we have always missed each other despite knowing each other via the HP links.  He should have been GROOTbaas.  :peepwall:

Walking around we soon started discussing tyres and the conversation turned to plat tyres.  I hate these discussions because it usually feels like tempting fate.  :lamer: :lamer: :lamer:
The kuier continued to late into the night.  By the time I got to bed Morne950 and the missus was making a pre dawn onion something dish.  We had a nice chat before I hit the sack.

Sunday morning was fresh to say the least – I packed said my goodbyes and headed to Sutherland.  At Theo’s place I filled up and started the return journey.  About halfway to Fraserburg some moegoe came around a turn in my lane and had to open up and get on the shoulder to avoid being hit.  As luck would have it was quite loose and my ass kept on grabbing left and right.  When I got out of the thick gemors something was off.

Stopped and jip and sure enough a decent hole in the rear tyre.

I got off thinking of William and JC’s chats the previous day of how TKC are NOT prone to punctures etc and could but shake my head since I brought this over myself for saying “ I have never had a flat on a TKC” EISH.  :patch:

I bought some of the fancy BMW type “8” shaped plugs some time ago got them out and opened my brand new insulation tube – nothing – not even a drop inside – sealed but empty.  Mental note – DONT ASSUME your kit is complete just because you haven’t used it in a long time.  I put in the “8” but the leak did not seal, pulled it out and replaced it with 2 snotrieme, they did the trick, old style isn’t always “not as good”.  I packed up and pushed for Fraserburg.  I could not but think how easy a repair was on tubeless as opposed to a tubed tyre, another plus for the HP.

The repair was holding and I made for Loxton, there I had a delicious farm breakfast at the Rooi Granaat while sitting next to four girls all on their phones never looking up and just sending this and that via that and that app and talking about FB posts etc.   We have really become so attached to our phone that we are starting to lose the ability to talk to one another.  I paid and made for Vic West, again I saw two tortoises just 2 “bultjies” apart.  They would probably meet in the next month or so
.
The roads were dead quite, I probably saw 5 vehicles (the one that cut the corner included) the whole day.  I pushed on to Richmond from Vic and got there just as a bunch of Buff guys were stopping for fuel.  I kid you not the guy behind me was on a Honda the size of the Star Trek Enterprise  :imaposer:  :pot: – yellow and green lights flashing to the beat of some HARD reggae music and revving the engine continuously, this again made me decide the rally scene was not for me.  I went onto the dirt road that led me to Hanover and hit tar from there to Colesberg.

Arrived home at about 17:30

Thanks to all for making it a nice break away from the mundane day to day life. Theo thanks again for the meat and the fuel.[/b]

I took it off - I have given someone sole option.
Still have not decided for sure - someone once said as confused as "vomit in a tumble dryer" - that about sums up my predicament  ;)

Baie Dankie - uitstekend dat jy jou avontuur deel.

Daai fiets van jou lyk na baie "FUN!" My opinie - moenie verkoop nie. Die plesier wat daai stuk toerusting verskaf is maar as geld werd.
