Will I do wrong in fitting a 140/80/17 on a DR650

What are the advantages/disadvantages of fitting a 140/80/17 on the rear of a DR650SE...it just LOOKS so much more 'beefier' than a 130. 

I need to start thinking of replacing it and would like to do it soon whilst there is some money left - before imminent retirement!

Which make tyre?

A Michelin T63 for instance looks skinny in comparison with the same size Dunlop D606.

I'm thinking (but remain open for suggestions/advice) a Mitas EO7 with a T63 front. I believe the knobblies on the front is the better option for dirt roads generally. Let me briefly explain how the bike is used...it travels very little on tar...mostly on gravel, but sometimes one needs to do some longish stretches of tar just to GET to the gravel.

The DR will eventually be my only bike as I will in the next couple of years have to 'get rid of' my KLR (used in the same fashion) and my TA 650 which is used mainly for tar. I'm not getting younger and handling/manoeuvring wise the DR is just soooo light/nimble (but not as comfortable as the KLR). I have always only done day trips (up to 320km) and will continue to do so. I have previously during leave, trailored them to further destinations and did daytrips there.

Remember I'm a toppie...and ride like one as well...no Mark Coma stuff.  I'm still sukkeling with a bruise incurred 2-3 months ago when the KLR just toppled over on top of me against an incline...so, at my age I can ill afford any serious offs!

A friend has fitted a 140 TKC on his DR. No issues.

You will do wrong because a 140 tire is supposed to sit on a proper rim, something like a 4.25 or at the very least a 3.00. The DR's 2.50 rim is too narrow for a 140 tire. A 130 is a marginal fit already.

The tire might be a bitch to fit and unseat, it will sit on the narrow rim forced into a weird cross section which may cause excessive wear and even internal damage.

Thanks all, and especially lecap, it is settled then...it will be a 130/80/17  - even if it doesn't look as nice as a 140... damn...

Why go bigger than a 130 T63? I ride a lot on my DR 650 mainly offroad and on some really extreme places and a 130 does the job superbly. Plus a 90/90 T63 on the front. Get about 7 000km on back and 10 on front

 A real silly (non-technical) reason...  it's just all about the looks...it looks so much better...the big fat rear tyre  , but I will do the right thing...not too worry!

Try a 130 Dunlop D606 next.

I had one on my one DR and a 130 T63 on the other DR. Vastly different appearance.

The D606 is not a high km tyre, but then also not that expensive. (Paid R 840-00 for one recently in Nelspruit.)

Well...at around R800 it's half the price of T63's and EO9's, and becomes an option - specially if they look 'beefier'  Am in no hurry so I have some time to search for them.

The T63 doesn't last any longer than the D606, the way I ride.

Have not used an E09 yet.

Thanks Zetman...het gebel, hulle het nie D606 nie en sukkel om te kry, sal Mitas EO9's he in twee weke se tyd en hulle het T63's in stock...
