After reading the Doring River Crossing thread in Planning a ride  , I thought its time we went on a Reccie ride to  go and have a look around , And see if they had any COLD BEERS !

So Andy660 , Mark B and Adventure hunter Left on Sunday morning early to take a look.
We did tar to Malmsbury , then dirt to Moorreessberg, and Tar to Citusdal

We did dirt to  Clanwilliam, refueld and hit the tar up Pakhuis Pass over the mountain,
!0 years 12 yrs ago , we did most of this route on the dirt , now all tar,
We went all the way on Tar until the Biedouw Valley turn off , where finally we got back on the Dirt.\

I popped into Mertenshoff and vissited the owner, Barry,
I took Mark and ADV H around the back and showed them the wonderful house that can hous 17 people and has an amazing campsite under willow trees
.
We then hit a left turn and did the 35km of rough dirt road down the valley to Utspankraal, the last farm at the left at the end of the valley , on the Doring River.

There we met up  with Glen the caretaker and maintenance man,
And yes , the Holder of the Cold Beer.
There isnt anything better than a cold beer to wash all that dust down after a long ride.

So we tied up our Horses in front of Glens Saloon , UITSPANKRAAL

Mark B and ADV Hunter making them selves at home on the Lounge Suite in the lobby at the reception.

So after chatting to Glen , we find out the Doring river is bone dry, and ADV Hunter and Mark want to change our plan and ride up the mountain.
I warn them , that as far as I remember , the two spoor is in very bad shape.,  But we s
decide , we are going,
We thank Glen for his Hospitality and over the Dry river I go.
I notice two graders on the left and hope they havent been up those tracks .
Well they had , and made a bloody mess grading loose sand all over the first 100 metres.,
But im through , and the road turns right up the first switch back , And F______k , Im doing the Amageza on my XT660Z Tenere , but with much luck , I manage to hold on and make it upt he carnage the graders have left behind all the way to the top.

Here I wait at the gate some 20 minutes  to see ADV Hunter waving at me , Well, bugger that Im not going back down.
Then I see ADV Hunter, thankfully on his way up

He comes all the way up and tells me Mark  isnt behind him and thinks he has fallen

ADV H is a brave young rider and turns around and rides back down to find mark next to his bike, with a hole in the crank case and a verh sore foot,
Hi rides back to ask if mark can ride the bike back up with the hole, I give him some duck tape and tell him to "plak " the hole closed and het on the bike and ride it up , I will fix  it from there.
Back down the mountain ADV H goes again.

Marks a tough guy , gets on the bike and rides up very painful ankle and all.
He does teach Skydiving for s living though !

Thankfully , here Mark  comes !

Once they both get back up .we try and get Mark  to sit in the shade of the sign,

Now to fix the bike !
I saw an Ostrich skeleton lower down the road and fetch a rib or two.
Using my Leatherman , I cut the bone to fill the hole on the clutch side of the motor , get whats left of Pratleys putty from ADV H and plug the oil leak,
So I ask who has alcohol to degrease the wet oil off the casing , Adv Hunter has those little alcohol swabs from a first aid kt , Perfect , I degrease the casing and smear the last remaining putty, and cover it up with duck tape. Done.
Check with mark, ADV H gives him anti inflammatory but Marks  not to keen to take anything as we need to ride  a long way back to Ceres.

My back tyre is finished and Im short some indicates and a Number plate , but other than hot , im good,

So all set and we are off again,

I assure Mark the rest of the riding from what I remember was good,

Well 1,5 kays around the corner , the roads washed away and its "sloote"  and sand and stuffed up tracks.

But  we make it to the farm house some distance from the pass,

At the farm , the farmer kindly gives us SAE 40 and we put two litres in the bike, no leaks so far.

Thanks given , And Mark on his bike , Im up and start off down the road,

I set the GPS for Stonehenge and its back out the farm and down the road,,

Some 5 kms down the road, I stop to zoom out on the GPS to check the direction on  the gps as it  is taking me NW.
Jip all good the route swings to the right around the mountain SE,

Just the ADV H, stops next to me and tells me the easier road is the other way ,

But Im happy with my gps route, and suggest that he should go the other way with Mark, but he decides to come with me.

Mark has gone the other way as the farmer told him its going to be way easier.

The farm is lekker sandy and there road hardly exists.
After I open the gate , ADVH goes past me, I take some pics  and follow the windy , now single spoor.

Next thing there is deep sand , thorn bushes and a vertical climb up a koppies with another very rocky 4x4 only road,
ADV H is up front and goes up first , he stops at the top and waits , I go up easily over the top and down the otherside, Wooopy, 25kms now of riverbed roads all the way to the R355.
But Mark isnt there,
ADV H, sees a fresh spoor of a bike on the road and we are fast down the road to catch up, but after 15 kms and still no sight of Mark , I stop ,tell ADV H to go to Stonehenge for fuel , I will get him there, make a u turn and go back the 15km to find mark,

Mmmm, When I get back to the junction , I find marks tracks , TKC in front , Karoo 3 on the back,

Now Im happy he has gone down the road to Ceres,

Right Stonehenge is my favourite place., Nou gooi mielies to Stonehenge,
When I get there I find no BMW, so I buy 5L of petrol , Down a lekker cold B L  and hit the road, now !8h00,
About half way to to Padstal I get stuck behind a bloody bakkie with a trailer and no cross wind to take the dust away. now 60km/hr down the R355 is no fun at all , but the the dust is hecktic thic and I can see nothing.
Thankfully the bakkie stops at OPadstal entrace, now locked,

I then see its 2 Bakkies with trailers.
Weg is ek , verby hulle in die donker , 140km/hr/met lekker spots is als reg.

500m past the Sutherland turn off , there is a moerse hole in the middle of the roads, 2m wide x 1m acroos with a pile of sand on the far side.
I his this bloody hole at 129km/hr , back wheel bottoms out , an im down the road on my front wheel , met a STOPPY soos nuks wat julle algesien het.
Im off the footpegs , looking down at the ground waiting for the impact, and I land on the seat, and stop some 50 metres down the road , with an instant cramp in my RH calf, with lots of stars and asto
ixes , I cant believe I didnt wipe out,

I ghet to Ceres , Mark is standing on one leg , ADV H has gone home .
We get on our bikes and go to the state Hospital , where ther is a long Q.
Right , where is the Net Carew private Hospital , Daardie kant toe maneer !

Off we go now, find the Hospital.
Walk in to this empty building , The nurse tells us , Jammer mr,Di dokter is nie hier nie, maar ons kan hom bell , maar hy vra R700 kontant, Mark yells them , bell hom , my foot is Flipping seer..
Now about 21h00 at night.

Doc , Mnr jou Ligemente is afgeskeur , maar julle moet terg na staat hospitaal vir Xtraale, Errrmmm , Nee,
Waar is die B&B ?
Very nice Doc , puts mark in the car, grab marks bag off his bike and follow the doc down the road to "The Village " B&B.(Doc is the brother of WD Karoo Kid)
Organize withe the manager, he is taking mark to the doc for xrays in the morning, chit chat and a shower and we are both asleep like children,
Got up early , said my thank yous , got to my bike and tried pushing it backwards out of the car port,
Maar hy voel so bietjie swaar, F,,,, , the back tyres flat @#$%$#@.
20 min, tyre change , Marks up and has organized Breakfast.

Mark to xrays Im on my way home.
Oh and mark forces his boot back on and nearly dies with pain, as the Q was longer than last night.
Ive gone already and he goes via tar straight home.

"Go ahead son. I dare you. Touch that swollen part again and we'll see who needs a doctor then!"

This is one scary picture!!! Mark looks like he is NOT in the mood for any jokes. In fact, he looks ready to strangle that doc!!

Hard core stuff! A broken bone is no joke - and an ankle at that!! Hectic!
