What's the dumbest thing you've done with your bike?
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:53:11 am »
Doing my usual last night I was fiddling with the GS again, whiskey flowing smoothly, me thinking of what I can do about the back shock that is a bit pap when she is fully loaded.
I decide that the only thing to do is to get a heavier spring made so I remove the back shock to take measurements.
Anyway one thing led to the next and eventually at around 23h00 I stagger off to bed.
Having to be at work at 06h00, I eventually drag myself out of bed (droog bek and all), get ready for work. So I load the top box with all the necessary shite for work, put on ATGATT + helmut and roll the bike off the centre stand‚?¶‚?¶.well you can guess what happened! She dropped down on to the floor like a ton of bricks with no back shock!
I mean WTF! There I was stuck trying to hold the bitch upright in the middle of the garage. I couldn‚??t reach anything to support the bike. Just didn‚??t have the strength to pull her back up onto the stand. Being parked between my CS and my trailer, I try both ways to see if I can lean her over without damage, but there is no way.
I even though of phoning the wife who was fast asleep in the house, but that would be suicide!
Eventually I manage to free the top-box with one hand and slide it out of the way. I worked my way around the back of the bike and managed to drag it backwards out of the garage‚?¶‚?¶you got to picture this‚?¶..Man I felt like a twatwaffle!
Anyway with the bike now lying on its side I refit the shock and then pick her up.

I‚??m still not sure if it was all the work or just being the mooring or the babelaas, but I never even felt the cold on the way to work today.

Oh dear! ;D

Think you need to switch from bourbon to Scotch... :D

Hope it's only the ego that's bent out of shape?

Good luck with the (next attempt at) working on the suspension! :) :)

Way back I bought my second TT600 (the first one I crashed within 5 days) and took it to the farm in the Karoo.  It was looking a bit tired so I decided to strip it completely and spraypaint all the parts and then put it together again.  Silly me loosened the gas canister atached to the back shock and yes you have guessed it, it literally exploded of the bike and shot off, missing me by milimetres, and dissapeared somewhere in the waenhuis.  It took me quite a while to find it again.  Now I had no clue how te reassemble it again, so had to load the bike on a bakkie and take it bask to Cape Town 600km away so that someone that knows what he is doing can fix my mess.

Now I really start to remember all the dumb stuff, back in '85 my cousin had I warmed up Kawa AR50 and we were fooling around on the bikes, somewhere in Durbanville.  The throttle cable on the AR got stock in the full open position and he nearly crashed.  Surviving this runaway bike was one thing, but how do you stop the engin which is revving at about 13 000 rpm now?  Did not help to switch of the ignition, so clever me told him to put the bike in 6th gear and drop the clutch causing the bike to stall.  They bike did stall, but the clutch exploded as well........

not me, but someone i know:

refitting the gear lever on a mx bike and it wouldn't slide onto the shaft. so he hits it with a hammer. the circlips break and the shaft exits the opposite side of the gearbox. he forgot to remove the clamping bolt on the gear lever, which he put back so that it wouldn't get lost.

different friend:
in an effort to fine tune his bike he cut the carb needle shorter, thinking he could get more fuel at full throttle. at full throttle the needle climbs out the main jet and gets stuck keeping the carb wfo. oh, how we laughed and laughed.
i'm not a complete idiot. some parts are missing.

Similar thing for me and the offroad MT5 I had - my solution ?

Disconnect the sparkplug...

I learned that the engine (although it did die) takes a loooong time to stop spinning while you are doing the 'spark plug' dance.

Also a mistake you only make once.

Ok, I'll play;

I stripped and rebuilt an XT500 in my kitchen. Ah to be a bachelor again.

All ready to be test started. XT500's have a deserved reputation with the kick-starter. I had fiddled with the timing when I had stripped it and figured I'll get it right once it is started.

I kicked cautiously for a while and nothing was happening, till I turned the fuel tap on. First kick after that, not expecting anything to happen, it backfired and kicked me back savagely. I got lofted half over the bike and lost my balance and fell over the other side onto the sink. I bounced off that and slid down between the sink and the bike. These acrobatics allowed my spring loaded side stand to whip up. The only thing that I managed to grab hold of was the mirror and clutch cable and so pulled the bike over on top of me.

Fortunately the handlebar caught the shelf on the way down, so though I was pinned, it was not the full weight of the bike and managed to squirm out from under it in a fit of painful rage.

I think I broke my ankle as it took months to heal and still to this day bigger than my left one. I was too poor, angry and embarrassed to go to the casualty and have to explain what happened.

I nearly sold that bike right then.

I wonder where that gravel road goes? And that, has usually made all the difference. (Apologies to Mr Frost)

Once (a long time back, in my younger days) I overfilled my 50 after an oil change. Took it for a nice long ride and then decided after I returned home that I need to get rid of the extra oil. Only way I could think of was to remove the sump plug to let out a few drops and put it back again.

It was only when the boiling hot oil started to run over my hand that I realised that it was not such a good idea. I lost the sump plug in the process and the small tin I had at hand to catch the ‚??few drops‚?Ě of oil was quickly overflowing. Result: BIG oil spil on brand new paving right in front of our front door. I think I still own my dad some money for the paving that had to be replaced.

when i wore a younger mans clothes i just replaced my front brakes drums on my TS400,,,

went to the bank on a test run, came out and proceeded to wheelie like a windgat across the road,,,

when my front wheel came down it locked and i galantly went over the handlebars and was merrily scrapping along on the tar road with the bike lying on top of me,,,in fact,,,in fact while i was sliding along i could hear the people laugh,,,

found afterwards that a washer had gone in between my drums and casing
