Askham Campsite.  In Askham.  Tobie and Rene van Wyk.  Camping R270 or Chalet (Single I paid) R500.  Hospitable people.  If you travel to Namibia through Rietfontein Border Post they are ideally placed. 0724376969

And if you are more adventurous, camp on a servitude road like the one from De Stoele.  No one will ever know that you are there.  The road is seldom used and right over the dunes.  About 15km before the park gate.  But there are many other places like that in the Kalahari. And camping is safe. But respect the people's property.

Armpie how many flat wheels did you have in the end. In 2014 I left with the rebel dogs on more or less the same route to the WD bash. At Harties I had my first flat tyre. About an hour later another one. I had to tell the rebel dogs to continue with out me. To make a long story short, I had 6 flat tyres that weekend.

Why and how many?

First at Piet Plessis because of this staple.  I am still not sure it it was part of the tyre.  It created a whole that the slime could not seal.

Second at Welkom when the slime made the patch come loose. Replaced slime filled 17 tube with a 21 inch front tube at Farmer Strauss's house.

Third one (not forced) replace the 21 with a 17 inch Jean le Roux gave me.  Then when the tyre  on the bike, I I realized that the tyre, that we cleaned from the slime inside it, was placed on the wrong rotation.  So off come everything. Do everything over again.  This 17 lasted 5 km before it blew.  I think we might have pinched the tube when fitting it.

Fourth time replace the blown donated 17 with the old 21.  But I saw it not fitting properly this time.  Took it off and re-fitted it again.  It lasted 20km to 5km from Askham.  It also blew, most likely shoddy workmanship by the fitter :)

5th time.  Replace blown 21 with old slime 17 from the first day.  As Askham.  it lasted 1200km and is still in action.

What I have learnt.  Try to have endurance heavy duty tubes.  I did 25000km previously without any hassle.  Last ime the value tore from the tube, but that was after all those k's.  Make sure you have a set of tyre levers.  make sure you have a patch and solution kit.   Carry a spare set of tubes.  or convert your tube to tubless.  I understand it can be done.   Slime worked before but his time it was trouble

This is what happens if you ride heavy duty tubes on tar for long stretches on a very hot day. This happened to my son when we did a trip together to the Equator and back in Kenya in 2010. It was a Michelin heavy duty tube and it melted inside the tyre but it did not go flat as the melted tube sealed the spokes. This whole lump was then sliding inside the tyre for I don't know how long. It only went flat when the tyre picked up a nail. The nail stopped the tube on the photo from sliding around coursing the bike to vibrate before going flat. Yo can read the whole story under the RR.  Ride Reports>Long Tours>Africa Tour to The Equator and Back In 40 Days page 18

First one was a nail that the tyre picked up. 2nd one was  side wall damage to the tyre caused by a rock. There after one flat wheel after another as the tube would make a hole where the side wall has been damage. Only one way to solve the problem-change the tyre. The post above is not related to this one.

Lekker report and history lesson Armpie.

We were in the Kgalagadi about this time when it rained and the vehicles were white from the mud and there were a few proper mudholes so you did well. At least the rain made the sand easier.

The "desert" was also like a park with long grass and green trees. Very scenic.  Must have been hard for those that trekked through there though.
