Will I make it?
« on: May 10, 2016, 12:40:16 pm »
I'm hoping some of you might be able to shed some light on the below scenario?

I have a trip planned this weekend, whereby need to cover a distance of around 300km's (all off-road mountain passes and rocky jeep track) on my 2013 KTM 690. With no fuel available on route and serious space limitations......do you believe I will make it with a full tank of 12 litres and a 5 litre fuel bladder?

I fully appreciate there are number of factors at play in term of fuel consumption, but do you believe the 17 litres of fuel for the 300km's is (i) more that enough (ii) touch and go (iii) no chance of making it?

Any idea on how many more litres of fuel I would need to take with?

Touch and go with a very light right hand but if there are other bikes with you you can always bum a bit of fuel or send someone to the petrol station

EDIT: I've done over 250kms on the stock tank but that was cruising at a constant 100km/h

An X Challenge, 660 and a XR650, so not much fuel to go around.

I would carry 2 x 2l coke bottles full of extra fuel for that distance.

Work on 16km/L
Something to think about...

An X Challenge, 660 and a XR650, so not much fuel to go around.
Tell the XChallenge that we have a bike-specific ALU auxilliary fuel tank in stock for 'HIM', then quietly go to Mdas and tuck one of those R30 'jiggler' siphon tubes into your backpack...!

Seriously, since I'm out of action for 6+ weeks, if you are taking luggage/overnight stuff, you could borrow my ALTRider Hemisphere saddle bags, which take 2x2L coke bottles, one in each side, which will get you through a tricky spot, did it myself in the Baviaanskloof, though fuel is best in approved containers/fuel bladders, etc.

Cheers

You should make it with that 17l if you drive conservatively...

+1. Also got one of those 5L Desert Fox bladders from Flying Brick since I'm also on a XChallenge and it only has a 8.2litre fuel tank. I'm still 50/50 on if i want to add the Aux fuel tank for various reasons.
Later I'll be getting some bags like Altrider or Giant Loop so would love to hear how it went fuel wise carrying the bladder and would like to hear how the XChallenge coped as well if you don't mind.

This pic here shows 2 x 1L MSR fuel bottles in the Hemisphere bag, but I easily fitted a 2L coke bottle in each side, and then just cut them up and binned them when finished.

Very cool solution. I like that (and the bag) a lot.
