Nimmo's EC Bash Baviaans 2016

EC Bash 2016 Baviaans

The last parts I wanted to fit to the bike only arrived after 17H00 so it was a late night on Wednesday.  :-\  I left Colesberg Thursday morning just past eight. The previous time I did the EC Bash I hit tar to Cradock and then swung onto gravel and spent that night in PE.
I was hoping to do gravel all the way this time.  Leaving Colesberg I swung onto the Groenfontein road that leads to Schoombee.  Less than 5km in the first part came loose on the 990.  :deal:  I stopped at a friend’s farm and was quickly helped to fasten the mirror.  The air was crisp and no wind, life was good.

I made good time and thoroughly enjoyed the ride after a hectic week or so.  From Schoombee I crossed the R56 and headed to Cradock on the road leading to Marlow.

I had just the night before managed to deliver a bike to a friend of mine in Beroda for his son. (With that said – thanks again Transporter MUCH appreciated  :thumleft:).  I popped in for some coffee and rusks and was on my way within 30minutes.  From Cradock I took the Swaershoekspass road towards Summerset East.  The roads were a gem.

At Sumerset East I received some Wapp’s suggesting the new bike would not make it so I replied.

The previous time I took the R335 the wildlife was plentiful so this section I took at a leisurely pace, this was also by far the worst section of road so far.

At Suurbergpass I recalled the previous time here was in pouring rain, I was glad it was not raining this time.   :thumleft: The pass had become very skurf.

At the Suurberg mountain Inn I stopped for a cold one – to find the waiter, wait for the coke, and to pay the man took longer than riding up Suurberg. Eish poor service.  :P

On my way down I recalled John “the Droll” having mentioned I drove passed his place the previous time so this time I kept an eye out.  I quickly stooped and got some local info on a gravel road to Uitenhage and was off.  It was steadily becoming dark.  I reached Patensie just as the last light off day passed.
I stayed over in the Ripple Inn Hotel in Patensie - http://patensieaccommodation.co.za .

What a nice place at a very reasonable price.  :thumleft: :thumleft:  I hit the sack and was gone before the first sheep passed me.  :deal:
The following morning I met up with Gerrard and Woody1 and family before heading into Baviaans.  The Kloof is always beautiful despite the dry conditions.

Since I have been here the roads have made a number of step ups due to erosion etc.  It made for a truly interesting ride.  ;)

The weather was overcast with an occasional downpour.  Smitskraal was low but slippery. Everyone went through without incident.  :3some:

As it goes the nearer one gets to a end destination you tend to speed up, well I in any case.  It was at one of these tight left hand turns that I came storming down and was faced by a GRINNING Gerrard sitting on the opposite side of a Hippo’s bath.  I got as SGB would say “target fixated” too late I realised there was a reason he got off and waited for me.  :bueller:   The bump before the pool launched me about 3m in right were the hole was in this nice little pool.  I came to a dead stop.  I have never seen a man laugh so hard or take such pleasure in raving about I GOT IT!!! I GOT IT!!!  :lamer: :patch: :spitcoffee:

Despite what my Wapp friends might think the bike started up and I managed to ride out.  ::)   Purely as a FYI – waterproof boots do have one minor flaw, your feet need to go in somewhere, I was DRENCHED.  :imaposer: :imaposer:  Never the less Onward to Doringkloof.
I found a nice spot taking into account rain runs downhill and trees protect etc.  After unpacking and pitching camp I had a BRILLLLLIANT hot shower.  Life was good.  As per usual the facilities were GREAT.  Thank you to all concerned.

IMG_4574 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

Friday and Saturday due to rain was spent meeting new friend and chatting to old ones.  I at one stage wondered why I was given so much @#$%   :komet:  but Blikes had sold his 990 and bought the only bike that uses a Toyota roll bar for a handlebar  :amazon:, Ball & chain was on a Honda and not one word about his 990.  DOUBLE standards.....  :deal:

Sunday the rain gave way just to pack up and set off, on my way out Parkinoff was hearding some other GS’s and making sure they made it out of the mud leading up to the road.  ;)  I waved goodbye and set off with every intention of stopping and taking pretty pictures. :pot:

IMG_4599 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

This was “THOSE” pics.  :laughing4: :laughing4: :laughing4:

IMG_4601 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

As I got back on the bike  Parky was on my ass and before long went pass, then the photographer in me made way  :imaposer: :pot: – well you know – the leisure trip turned into a torrent of mud and spray and ass swinging and sliding.  It was BRILLIANT.  :ricky:

At the Uniondale's turnoff we said our goodbyes – this came to mind.  :peepwall: :peepwall: :peepwall:

I barely made Willowmore running on fumes and taking in a whole 19.6L.  :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:

From Willowmore to Colesberg I hit tar and it turned out to be the right decision as it poured the whole way home.  :P :P

Thank you Gerrard for another well planned Bash , thanks also to everyone who made an effort to chat about ditjies and datjies.  Just as an FYI by Tuesday we already had 138mm rain.  ;D ;)
