I'm not a big fan of the 1190 so I'd choose the AT
But if I already had a bike AND 160K then I'd buy neither and rather blow the money on a trans-Africa trip

A second hand 990 and a garage full of beer
Why do things that only happen to stupid people always happen to me?

Help me out here. A 1190R sold for around R150k in 2013.  If you get R130k now for a well looked after bike - I think it is fair wrt retaining value?

Also wonder how people can call the AT reliable??

Makes me also wonder.  Just because the old 1150 did 100000 kms without a blink doesn't make the new 1200LC theee most reliable DS bike ever!

Finally some sense.

BMW's services are in most cases the same price as KTM's , so is owning a KTM really more expensive?

No one likes a dead standard bike, so your 160 is quickly going to become 180 or 190, so I would much rather buy a 1or2 year old bike and get all the farkles with it. Saves you loads of money

1190R is the answer
2012 KTM 990 Adventure
2008 Kawasaki KX450F (sold)
2006 Kawasaki KX250 (sold)
1999 Suzuki RM125 (sold)

Not the worst advice at all, I was gonna sell my Transalp 700 and buy the AT for sure, but selling a bike in this market is not the easiest thing in the world especially with winter approaching, so ive been thinking of a South America trip with the money instead and just keep the transalp.

Agreed, went for a test ride on the new AT and man what a lovely bike, smooth as silk and great all rounder. BUT, I will not trade my Vardero or Transalp for one, it's just not worth it unless money is not a problem then you should have bought it already  ;).

My first thought was a nice late model low mileage DR650SE (I'd take a new one if it was possible) and an epic three month round trip Nam - Vic Falls - Malawi - Dar - Moz.

The situation was similar when we got married. Two DR's (and some change) just seemed to make so much more sense than one R1150GS. And they still do today.

I never was a fan of the big DS bikers with maybe the one and only exception of the Tiger 900 in the days just after I came to SA and whilst the memories of my European road biking days were still fresh. Hence no vote from my side in this poll.

In general I'd go for the Honda simply because it is new. Alternatively save until I can afford the KTM new.
