Possible cam chain tensioner
« on: May 31, 2016, 06:37:45 pm »
Hi All
It seems, I hope not, that my cam chain tensioner is busy giving up the ghost.
When I start the engine cold, I can hear a soft metallic clicking noise from the top of the engine.
I can hear the cams clicking, but this seems to be another noise...
It is time to check valve clearances, will do that over the weekend, but this has me a little worried.  :-\

Has anybody experienced this?
b.t.w. this is a 2009 690 with 72000km on the clock.

If it is ticking in the top, either a rocker arm that requires replacement or decompression arm.  The cam tensioner is the cheapest option, though  ;D

Thanx, will inspect them over the weekend.
It's probably time to replace them anyway.
I saw lots of interwebs discussions on rocker arm bearings that's not holding up. hello bank manager...  :bueller:

I think I'll just take it past one of the KTM workshops and have them listen to the sound.... and make an informed suggestion.   :)

Don't panic yet, clean the tensioner properly and check if the noise goes away. (this will only last a few days until the noise returns, but at least you will know where the problem lies.)

The rocker arms are not that expensive, most guys take a spare set on long trips.
