It's that time of year again, folks – Pirelli SA Bike of the Year.
How it works is that the most experienced and influential motorcycle journalists in South Africa nominate 15 bikes from the list of eligible motorcycles. The top 15 most voted bikes make it through to the final, and will be ridden for three days in Mpumalanga by the judges and they will then vote for the winner.
The criteria for eligibility is that these bikes must be new for 2016 (or the latter part of 2015), and they must be either completely new models, or must have received significant engineering upgrades, in other words no bikes with new paint schemes or mild facelifts. Also, bikes must be on South African showroom floors when the judging takes place, so the BMW Scrambler, for example, isn't eligible. More so, only road legal bikes are eligible.
Keep in mind that voting for Bike of the Year is not a case of taking the list of bikes in the final and choosing the one you'd most like to buy out of that list. It's choosing the bike that performs best with regards to it's intended function and its rivals within its class, including bikes not on Bike of the Year. For example, the Multistrada Enduro might look very appealing, but keep in mind how it will perform as an adventure bike, and how it would perform against the likes of the GS, KTM 1190, Super Tenere, etc.
