1190 adventure Ktm
« on: June 15, 2016, 08:45:42 pm »
Want to buy one have to be the Adventure and not the R.

How is this bike  on dirt roads?
How is it in sand?
How does it compares against the R1200gs/a LC K50 off road?

I am not bothered with sharp turns like the trophy riding but more in action on the roads?

Thanks

They are both equally good bikes on and off from all I have read and seen on YouTube. Have not ridden 1190 offroad, so I am only talking on what the reviews all say.

1190 have more power though.

Ride all of them and decide for yourself

Had them both for about 15000km each....

Both good bikes at everything, and you will be happy with either one...but I think you decision should be based on your riding style. If you like comfort and smooth power delivery get the BMW. If you like aggressive in your face raw power and spend some time on the back wheel get the KTM.

P.S. my wife said the BMW was more comfortable on the back than the KTM.

Do you have the std seat or the KTM Powerpart Ergo seat? (consist of 2 parts)

I had the standard seat...but I did not find either of them uncomfortable....just found the bmw more comfortable....I have never been uncomfortable on any bike even after 800km a day in the saddle. For me uncomfortable is doing a 7 hour Argus on a road bicycle   after that a motorbike seat is like a goma goma lounge suite :imaposer:

Thanks a lot. Ja have to say also think the bmw is more comfortable. We took the Africa Twin and the 1190A for a ride today both git strong points. The Ktm just got more power and its if it is more motorbike for the rand getting the A for 118 and that with extra pointers is giving the Ktm 1190 A the Advantage. I ride the 1190R this is for my wife. But she can ride just need to up on skills abit.

How did you find the bike in sand and dirt roads did you find the bars to narrow low down power not good enough centre of gravity okay?

"In comparison to the category leader BMW R1200GS 2015, the KTM 1190 Adventure 2015 is 8kgs (17.6lbs.) lighter, offers 16kgs (35.3lbs.) more payload capacity, 23HP more engine performance, 3L (0.8USgal.) more fuel capacity, but 130W less alternator performance and on top the 1190 is chain driven. They both offer the same amount of torque which is more relevant for touring purposes, although the 1190 has slightly better power to weight ration. From the ergonomics point of view they are very similar and the best of the line. Still the 1190 offers more features and standard equipment such adjustable footrests, hand guards. On the other hand, the KTM 1190 Adventure 2015 has no cruise control nor shaft drive available and the standard 1190 includes no engine guard like the GS.

BMW R1200GS 2015 Touring Enduro

They both offer also electronically controlled suspension systems as an interesting option, but the KTM 1190 Adventure 2015 has a traditional USD front suspension which is slightly better in offroad riding. On the other hand, the BMW Telelever is slightly better on the road which makes them both different and equal at the same time. At the end, the main difference concentrates to the absence of the shaft drive and more versatile adventure character of the 1190."

Some of the difference from an article off the net.....for me personally coming from an enduro background, I found the bars perfect on the 1190 and too wide on the GS. Offroad I would say the 1190 is marginally better but only on the more technical sections....In the sand its mostly about technique....I normally just pin it in the mud or sand and try stop the front wheel from washing out. I once hit quite a deep hole in the transkei with the GS....The hole was full of very fine sand (fesh fesh type like in the dakar ) so it did not look like a hole so I did not anticipate it...long story short I thought I was going to fall but the GS somehow managed to stay upright . A similar thing happened on the 1190 when I hit a goat at about 120kph but I was expecting it...which just goes to show both bikes are actually far more capable then the rider :thumleft:
