A bike with an aftermarket pipe needs a BoosterPlug more.
Fitting an aftermarket exhaust pipe will make a bike breathe better and hopefully improve high rpm performance. Will it do damage? As the O2 (Lambda) sensor takes care of the air fuel ratio at higher RPM’s there is no risk of damaging the bike when installing aftermarket exhausts and filters (under normal conditions) on a modern fuel injected bike.
But the downside is that it aggravates the symptoms of lean mixtures at lower rpm.
Euro 4 regulations prescribe that bikes have to run as lean as possible, and better breathing means that even more oxygen is introduced into the mix, making the mixture slightly leaner, thus aggravating the symptoms. Introducing a BoosterPlug helps to sort out the effects of lean running engines by adding 6% fuel – just when you need it.
Lean mixtures rob bikes of low rpm driveability - you will find hints of this in almost every new bike test. An aftermarket pipe moves the torque curve up the rev range, making a bike even less ride-able at lower rpm. The result is that you would lose more bottom end rpm usability. A BoosterPlug will counter the loss of tractability at low rpm by introducing a 6% richer mixture when you need it: at idle and acceleration – more so in the lower part of the rev range. Even when decelerating the richer mixture helps to prevent the engine from stalling, and curbs the popping effect.
Apart from fitting an orange light cover and proper LED spots, fitting a BoosterPlug is one of the best things one can do to make a modern bike run better.
I just received new stock for most bikes, except Harley Davidson.
