Harleys are very reliable and fun to ride. Why must we explain why we ride them? Imagine me asking somebody why he rides a Moto Guzzi.Wtf? Have a look at this Picture, do I want it? Hell Yes! What will the Neighbours say?

There is no better feeling climbing on my HD with my missus and going for a lekker cruise. If I want to spend 10 hours a day in the saddle,I want to be on a Harley.
My bike is reliable, now has 50 000km on the clock without anything more than scheduled services. It handle good for a bike that is built to be tourer. It stops pretty decently thanks to the Brembo ABS braking system. Air suspension lets me set it up just right . Cruise control means on long stretches I can relax and steer with my feet. Numb bum does happen too often.
And every now and then you get to giggle when sports bike struggles to get away from you on a twisty mountain pass. It is something my missus loves to do ,and for that reason there will always be a Harley in my garage. Some call it midlife crisis, but I been riding them since my thirties.
I really do not give a hoot what others think,I am not that insecure with my choices

What makes a Harley a great bike?

Is it reliability?
Handling? Braking perhaps?

Looks?

Performance?

Help meout here! What makes a Harley a great bike, as many here says it is?

And don't say it's a great bike because your great grandfather's uncle's wife's midwife ploughed the land with it.

If I can attempt an answer...

Would you not like to own an old muscle car? Say an old mustang. It will have precense (spelling?) But its brakes and suspension will suck while the engine is average but sounds awesome. For me, its exactly the same.
Its not meant to be fast but its an awesome experience to ride aggresive

Give me the choice of a bike or an old Chevy Can-Am and the Chevy will win hands down. (Mustang is great)...but have you ever taken a Can-Am for a spin? Motherlessfathers!! Give me the new Guzzi, or a Grizo and a Can-Am and I'll be happy  ;D

Offshore, it's not about explaining why you ride them, I would like to know why you like them.

Let me explain, the Jap cruisers mostly have better brakes, handling ??? and much better reliability than the American brand. All I can say in defense for Harley
is that they are the original V-twin cruiser, and the Japs are all copies.

Now in the sixties the British Triumphs, Norton's, BSA's, Velocette's, Vincent's and some more were the original performance bikes. We all know the story, of how the
Japanese came with better machines and closed down the British bike industry.

Why is HD still standing? Thank the American government, which through a long series of laws and bancruptcy bail-outs, have enabled this overpriced and under-valued
dinosaur to survive.

Every HD rider is an outlaw biker, a one %er, and it can be seen on any Sunday, with mean-looking accountants roaming the boulevards of the cities.

If you like your Harley like I like my Yamaha, fine, but there are MUCH better tools available for less money.

If you are going to go for a bike like that, then the Indian Chieftain is the only one to go for.
