KTM S.A Response on oil use
« on: August 12, 2016, 09:29:54 am »
My 2015 KTM 690 Enduro R with 20 000km is using oil after they changed the valve stem seals. The response from KTM SA is to change to a thicker oil. I am not happy with this response as this is a brand new bike of 11 months old...What do you thing they should replace or do to fix this problem?

If it is only after they changed the valve stem seals then they have done something wrong and the dealer should be liable to sort it out .

They replaced the valve stem seals because the bike used oil...

Maybe they should have dug a bit deeper, like until they found rings ;) :deal:

Agree.

Changing stem seals on a one year old 20,000km engine is a somewhat unusual approach.

Using a thicker oil is complete bullshit. What do they want you to use? Gearbox oil? Bitumen ??? Thicker oil will possibly lead to higher cold start wear. It will not reduce the oil consumption at all.

How much oil does the engine use per 1,000km?

Must surely be rings if the valve stem seals are new. I would suggest compression test ?

Did you do the airbox leak preventative fix before the bike started using oil? I.e. insulate the lip of the airbox and around the airfilter with grease?

If not, I'm afraid dust may have got into the engine with the resulting damage (dust ingestion  seems to be a 'feature' on modern KTMs).

I don't understand you last sentence - did you seal the airbox or not before it started to use the oil? If not, and you were riding in the dust, I am afraid you have the culprit.

Not sure what KTM SA are going to say without some indication of what may be the root cause. I would follow sidetrack's advice and do the compression test. If that shows lower compression I think you have something specific for KTM SA indicating dust ingestion...

Difficult to do a compression test on the 690, but a leakdown test will provide the answers.

I did not seal the air box at first as I was under the impression this is a dirt based bike and should be able to handled riding in the dust. I checked the air box after my first trip and found dust in air box I contacted KTM and told them what I saw they said they seal the air box with grease. When I asked why mine was not sealed I got no answer. I now use a foam filter and never see any dust in air box...

I am afraid there may be your answer. KTM didn't bother in 8 years or so of 690 production to fix that stupid airbox. (Off-topic' can somebody confirm if they did fix it on 701?)

I am using foam filter as well, but still seal the lip with the grease just to be sure. I don't think it was the paper filter itself that was letting dist in - rather the lack of seal around the lip, and that may be the same problem for foam filter (but if you don't see dust in then maybe it is not necessary).

There is a very high possibility this thread will turn into talking about Straight six or 5 cylinder car engines soon.  :pot:

Do you oil your foam filter?

Without oiling them they are more than useless.

Looks like the same story as with the 1190, good luck with the fight.

Yes I oil the filter and  seal it with grease. This is the last shit I am taking from KTM....If anybody wants to buy a KTM first refer them to me....
