690 Enduro vs 690 R
« on: August 29, 2016, 12:51:38 pm »
Dogs, I'm having trouble finding a descent page where there is a complete comparison between these 690's. I have been moving away from the big ol 990 and looking for something a bit smaller that can be thrown around as well as a descent commuter.

The 690 imho opinion is the best 50/50 bike for traveling and playing purposes respectively... But there is 2, the enduro and the r.

What are big differences? Personal experience tells more than a bunch of technical specs...

The bottom line (up to 2011):

The R has the orange frame, smaller clocks and longer suspension travel.

Up to 2011 they all had the 650cc motor.

Would I notice any difference when riding these 2?

It depends on your length and suspension preferences. But, yes

I'm about 1.82 and +- 90kg. I'm thinking more the R for me, seeing that I want to handle the 690 like a 450, better susp on the R would be better for that purpose?

Send GJ a PM, he'll be able to explain the difference in detail to you. As good as what the R's suspension was, the motor had some issues that have been addressed on the new model.
Present bikes: BETA 300RR, KTM 690, Yamaha WR250F

If you're dumb you gotta be tough !!!

Are you looking for such an old model? As far as I can tell all the bikes from MY 2012 were R, there was no non-R version. In prior versions the difference was as already said - longer suspension on R, different clocks and frame color.

If you want to use it for travelling and reliability is a consideration I would look on the later models (2013 and onwards - the engine evolved further though - 2014 has 2 spark plugs and throttle by wire) in which they have ironed out some of the early issues (and which have more power and 690cc engine vs 650 of the pre 2012 models). However in the typical KTM fashion, they have dumbed down suspension on the newer models, so suspension-wise the earlier models were better.

So the best compromise suspension/engine seems to be 2013 when they already had 690 engine and still old suspension. 2014 on wards has forks with separate rebound and compression damping and without compression preload, which probably do not hold candle to the older forks.
