Digitaldan rides Donkerhoek and has lotsa fun !
« on: February 04, 2006, 06:53:13 pm »
It's a sunny Saturday and the DRZ is all gassed up ready to ride. I decided to visit a nearby offroad riding area (Rhino park) to see how the Z would do. So of I went, some 20 minutes later I was ready to have some fun  :D

This area has lots of sand and I think my tyre pressure was too high, I made it through ok but the front went from side to side like crazy. I have a new respect for the guys in the Dakar doing this day after day !
I had to ride home and I forgot my pump at home so I did not want to let the pressure go too low. There were some great dirt mounds to play on and the DRZ went up them like they weren't there. It always amazes me how easy this bike climbs. Now if I can only get comfortable in the sand. Some of the uphill sections.

After the recent rain there were plenty of water as well and not alot of dust. Everyone was on quads or mx bikes but any dualsport should be able to ride here unless it's a really heavy bike with street based tyres.

This little downhill was fun, I did this section three times.

This was a very tricky little climb, see the DRZ at the top.

There were some nice little open sections as well but lookout for the sandy patches !

My favourite picture, she's a beaut !

Then it was time to go, I remembered a dirtroad leading to Donkerhoek which I have passed many times so I decided to check it out. It was nice and hardpacked, I stood on the pegs and started humming the Dakar theme song .... I can dream can't I

You can see just how much rain had fallen the previous day.

Bike wash is on the menu.

I took a turnoff to Mooiplaats and stopped for this pic of the valley below, nice and green !

The cattle agreed.

I also noticed the service road next to the train tracks, I have to explore that road sometime !

This was a nice little stretch, I parked the bike and had a drink. There was no one around, only birds chirping, ahhh peace and quiet I love it.

My version of an arty farty picture.

Now this is dualsport country. Nice open dirtroads that stretched for miles.

I wanted to do more riding but noticed some storm clouds forming so I decided to call it a day. I had a great days riding. As I'm sitting here my DRZ is still dirty, hmmm good excuse to do some more trails tomorrow !

Also have to mention that my headlight setup and diy little windshield stayed on the bike so I guess they were a success.

Thanks for reading  :thumbleft:

Lekka report DD.

I was given the co-ordinates of Rhino park by FortyZA, want to go there to play in heavy sand before the Moz trip.
Maybe next weekend.

You'll have alot of fun, it's really tough for me to learn to ride sand. I want to play around with my suspension and try lower tyre pressures. Glad you liked the trip !

Nice Dan. Very nice. You will have serious trouble trying to find wide open spaces like that here in Europe.  It is one of the things I seriously miss about SA... Thanks for sharing.

Great report, excellent pics, fantastic riding and awesome bike - Thanks for sharing your story.
I like your bike more and more everytime I see it! :D

P.S. Stupid question... is it a 400cc 4-stroke or a 2-stroke?

Yikes, imagine a 2 stroke 400... it would kick you harder than a donkey, probably put out more power than LITO's black beast.
It may be one of the smallest true dual sports but the DRZ is one sweet riding offroad machine. A lekka baby thumper.

400 4-stroke and I love it ! Being light and nimble it makes up for my lack of riding skill  :D  Yesterday at the canal I had a 10 -15 meter slide on my front wheel through the mud but stayed on, if it was a heavier bike I'm sure I would have binned it.

I think the DRZ is also a sweet ass offroadie, but on the pondering of the power of a 2stroke 400cc being more powerful than a 950....

Oi, I don't wanna be difficult but who remembers that vicious beast from the early eighties, the Yamaha IT490? Perhaps it will not top the 950 in absolute horses, but it had a legendary powerband and, if I remember correctly, was one of the first bikes to run up Dune 7. Two-stroke, of course and it was definitely not for the meek.

Btw. Wonderful pics and reports as always, Digitaldan

Thread hijack on - the KW of the 950 is 72kw, and torque is 105hp.

Nothing wrong with facts. Lets check out the IT 490 two stroke facts and figures!

Excellent photo's Dan, I can actually taste the red dirt in my mouth 13 000 miles away

Where exactly is Donkerhoek?

I remember riding a KTM495 back in '83 / '84. Damn hoooooligan bike.
It was brutally fast... apparantly it was the 1st dirt bike to do over
200km/h. I was shaking every time I got off it. Good thing that I just
settled for its baby brother - the KTM 250 GS. Nice bike... but a bitch to
set up the front suspension.

Hijack on

A 2T gives about roughly twice the power as a 4T, hence the MX2 racing class is 125 2stroke and 250 4strokes against each other.
MX1 is 250 2T and 450 4T. (less than double)

The KX250 puts out more torque and power than the KLR650!

A 400cc 2stroke should be able to be tuned to at least a 800cc 4strokes power, maybe more, thats why I guessed close to the KTM 950 twin.

Just imagine a 400cc 2-stroke DRZ, weighing 140kgs and putting out power close to the KTM LC8.  Eish.

Hijack off.
