You know they have these new ferries now...they're self propelled?
Sometimes I think SA is behind the times ;-)

Hi there
I think you are the guy I spoke to at Witsand on Monday?
Did you take my advise and visit Barrydale?
Please post more pictures and route details as I really enjoy this kind of post.

Semi-jack: Hayu; tomorrow Friday is a public holiday, so the advice I gave you on the SHOEI still stands, but the Agent/Dealer will be closed for the public holiday....

So if you CAN get to Trac-Mac TODAY still, it will help your cause, otherwise Monday, maybe?
Cheers

Heading into Namibia today.  One suggestion was to head through Rosh Lunar to Luderitz, the other was to sidetrack to Ais Ais first???
Any other suggestions?  Thinking Walvis Bay for Christmas...

That's what I've heard, but rumour has it that there's a Walvis Wild Dog hosting a Waifs and Strays Christmas dinner to itinerant wanderers.  Yum yum.  I can only imagine how much stuffing comes out of an Ostrich!!!

If I had to get from Cape Town to Walvis for the first time ever - I would hope that someone would tell me to go this way:
Head up the N7 past Springbok, through the border at Vioolsdrif
Head West along the border (with the Orange river to your left) until you reach Rosh Pinah.  Detour to Ai-Ais (one night sleep-over) and Hobas (view point onto the Fish River Canyon) will be well worthwhile.
Detour to Luderitz to see Kolmanskop (the famous ghost town)
Find the D707 to head North on (turn left off the tar about 60km after Aus)
From here you basically just keep heading NNW, taking in Sesriem (and Sossusvlei), Solitaire until you get to Walvis.

If you have time, try and get Spreetshoogte pass in.

And then three things:
1) Never ride past an open petrol station
2) It may be sandy.
3) It will be very hot.

I'm suitably jealous!
The three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40 and a hammer.  If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape.  If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.  Otherwise use the hammer.

I've learned the petrol station lesson already.  Not me, but I've become a Trusty Sidekick...one who tows motos with empty gas tanks, apparently.  All the way to permanently closed gas stations!  Nothing that a 200 km round trip with a gas can can't remedy😨

No.  Bumped up against the holidays and the timing didn't work.  In Luderitz now and living with it.  Thanks for the thoughts,
Cheers,
Steve

So I had the big Canadian staying at my place for a couple of days ....and what a great guy he is.  A real friendly guy with a great sense of humour.
So if you Dogs see him along the road ...look after him ...not that he needs it ...but you will be well entertained for you trouble  Ask him for the bear story....Its a hair raiser  :o

We did a couple of rides together ...The peninsula , Cape Point , Hout Bay , Chapmans Peak, Bains Kloof  etc etc

Got a couple of pics ...courtesy of XT Joe.

Been missing this thread so I had to catch up this morning. Still cold here, stay in Africa.  I traveled  much the same route and had no security issues, just pay attention and live life.  Every country has the places you don't want to be for too long, but you traveled the Americas so sure you know that.  (they say in Colon Panama it is not whether you will get mugged but how often you will get mugged)  Little  hard to get use to the bars and fences but I think that is more a statement of the ineffective law enforcement than more risk than you would find in Tacoma.

South Africa is the most hospitable place I have ridden, (72 countries and counting), the Wild Dogs will take care of you well. It is on the top of my list to revisit but I still have the Middle East and Asia to go before I start the second round. How long are you going to be on the road? If you are interested in where I went, have blog at "horizonsunlimited.com,tstories/thode"
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but  rather a slide in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body totally worn out and screaming "Woo Hoo what a ride"

Calling all Wilddogs...just to say thanks one last time!  I can't believe that I have been so remiss in my duties!

I am currently sunning myself in Southern California, while I wait for the (unusual) snow to melt on the Canadian Wet Coast.  My bike is currently in a container in Singapore, awaiting transfer to a ship heading for Vancouver, ETA first week of April.

Unfortunately the new TIP regulations in Thailand threw a wrench in those plans and not travelling on a Carnet made other SEA countries non starters.  Think I'll buy/sell and or rent from this point on.  NA/CA/SA are easy to travel, but SEA/OZ/NZ throw up too many roadblocks and expenses these days.

I love my bike, but I'm not married to it...anyone wanting to swap bikes or homes for a few weeks just let me know?  1200GSA, F800RT, wife's Can Am Spyder 3 wheeler, or 650 Burgman scooter, just let me know...I'll throw in a house too, ha ha.

Once again...thanks South Africa!  You were great!  I'll be back!
Steve

Glad to hear you had a great time.
But I think you owe us some more pics or dare I say, an actual ride report...
May the bridges I burn light the way...
