What is a modern day legend bike?
« on: September 29, 2016, 08:46:44 am »
After reading this thread
http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=199781.0
I started wondering, on what bikes today will there be similar threads in 20 years time.
Were these legend bikes unique or were they just popular and taught us to ride?
Will a future thread be on the popular 1200GS or the equally popular XR250? Or less popular due to price maybe Ducati Enduro? Which will have you reminiscing in 30 years time telling your son that was an awesome bike and you would still like to buy one because you had one or always wanted one?

First one that comes to mind
Honda cbr600rr-if they do drop it from their line up within the next year or so I'll be sad.
There's lots of talk due to low sales around the world. :-\

Sadly I no longer have one but I think the Yamaha Super Tenere is going to be one of them. I administer a FB page for this bike with over 3800 users worldwide and itís following in the mould of its predecessors as itís proving to be super reliable and pretty much bomb proof. The guys are getting huge kilos on these bikes and using them for a multitude of different functions the world over.
Present bikes: BETA 300RR, KTM 690, Yamaha WR250F

i reckon the 950/990 in all its adventure guises must be on that list. Could it be the last large simple bike made??

People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day. And doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.

Agree. I think there is more passion in this bike than in say a 1200GS or STenere.
I have found a legend status bike is not always the best bike or most reliable, but stirs emotion.

But maybe it will be a KLR, a legend like some people believe the Beetle or a Golf is?

I think the KTM 950/990 will definitely be there.

I also think the first and third generation Kawasaki ZX 10 R will be there.

I suspect the simple 650 lineup will feature. XR650L, DR650 and KLR650. Also the XT660. Simple reliable takes you anywhere kind of bikes, even if maybe a little slower than a race bike. These are much like the old hiluxes to me.

EDIT: And dare I say it, BMW650's like the original dakar  :peepwall:  (I feel like I've betrayed the world so should go flog myself now) :lamer:

To me the true legends are the "first" not the ones which improved on existing concepts or which simply sold well.

Honda CB750 Four - This is probably the most debatable since straight fours were absolutely nothing new in bikes. See Nimbus (late 1920's and 1930's) or FN (1909). But it kind of was the mother of all modern road bikes.

Suzuki Katana: Modern sports motorcycle ergonomics, Japanese product designed in the target market.

Honda CBR600F: The first modern sports bike which found the balance between performance, brakes and chassis.

Suzuki GSX-R 750 (first series) First "Superbike"

XT500. First big CC Dual Sport Single.

BMW R80 G/S First Adventure Bike.

You cvan probably find a few more.

To me the first XT 600 Teneres.

They were built in a time no one knew what to do with them. All the other bikes in that size were play bikes, yet the Teneres were tourers. Very good ones too.
If they were built again today with a happy button they would sell container loads.

Some good points being made here  :thumleft:

My calls on what would become desirable would be: (in no order)

BMW R1150GSA
KTM 950/990 SE & Adventure range
Ducati 916/996/999/1098/1198
Honda VFR 400 NC 30 as well as RVF shape
Kawasaki ZX 14
Suzuki Hyabusa
Honda Blackbird
Yamaha XTZ 660 Tenere
Triumph Bonneville range
Suzuki GSX-R 750
Yamaha R1
BMW G650 X-challenge
Husqvarna TE610

can't think of many more

I'm a fan of Harley's (especially the Road King) but they have been exactly the same since 1984, and they will keep on producing them exactly the same way for at least another 20 years from now.
