In my personal opinion. In order of age.  I reckon these bikes made in the last 30 years will either become, or are already legends. Most of these have already been mentioned.

Ducati 916
Suzuki Hayabusa
BMW R1150GS
Kawasaki H2

I also suspect the BMW S1000RR and Yamaha R1 can be somewhere in there.

When does the legend start M?
Today or say begining of 2000?

It doesnt really matter. I was just wondering what will be the topic of a legend bike thread 25 years from now. So it will probably still have to be capable to do the odd trip and be (relatively) comparable and fun to modern bikes of that time.

What is coming out in this thread is how many good options we have now.
Maybe thats the difference, 30 years ago there wasnt that many options and it wss clear which was good and which not.

The first road bike that got me drooling was a Suzuki GSX 1100 in 1983.. A silver one with blue pinstripes. Apparently very frugal on fuel for the engine size.

Ktm 640 Adventure has to be up there in the not so distant future.

Most people in 30 years time will have learnt on one and remember how reliable and fun they were. Like 50cc days.

Apart from the XT500, very few duelies became legends.

So maybe:
Fireblade
R1
Gsxr
KTM 950 Adv
Ducati Diavel
Hyabusa.
It's better to burn out than to fade away!

I was halfway through compiling my own list of real legends, when I realised that the wording of the heading says "Modern day" legends.

So, I'll have to re-think, but now the list will be much shorter for sure.  ;)

Certainly hope so because I have two  ;D

Just did a search for mini trail (which I also have) on gumtree and nearly fell off my chair when I saw the asking prices
