Most of us are familiar with GoogleEarth
Here is a similar program with much, much better visuals called World Wind.

the program is about 58mb and once installed you still have to download the detailed maps - You really need ADSL for this

while it is not as commercially friendly as GoogleEarth, the pics are better and you can see the mountains and valleys with far greater accuracy. It is also easier to see the condition of dirt roads and landscapes you plan to travel through.
