A Glamping trip to the Cederberg and West Coast
« on: October 19, 2016, 04:39:07 pm »
My Glamping trip to the Cederberg and West Coast

Glamping one might ask ….well thats when you take your tent with all intentions of using it but end up finding better more Glamorous accommodation like a lodge…ready made camp or even a cheap hotel and then you Glamp at the nicer option….. now you are a Glamper….so according to my wife I went on a Glamping trip

Truth be told i had all intention of camping, packed my own food …took vacuum packed meat and Two Minute Noodles even had some stuffed olives, tin sardines…..a campers feast

We had recently had my Dads 80th Birthday celebration so i waited until all the family and friends left before taking a few days out for myself to go exploring the cape on my GS

olmans 80th

Had heard a lot about the Cederberg Oasis from some Wild dogs and had never been there myself so this was my first stop

Left Cape Town on Thursday took back roads to Wellington and up over Bainskloof pass which is always beautiful

from there to Ceres then on to Cederberg valley and the Oasis

the place is biker friendly and really geared for the overland, backpacker or the dirt biker…Met Gerhard or Gerrit the owner he was a nice guy and has a one pager honesty bar system which you mark as you consume

I noted a lot of WD stickers on the fridge….so most of you will know what I’m on about

I had my own tent and mattress but for R165 or R100 bucks extra from camping i decided it was a better option to stay in one of his tented units with mattress and bedding all sorted

this place was nice and peaceful and they left me alone to just do my own thing, which i did I had brought two books to read….my plan was to relax and that was exactly what i did….it was awesome….no traffic….no people

The Uncle recommended that i take the two spoor technical ride to Wuppertal which is what i did …also never been there

the section was fairly demanding not your straight forward farm road……there were washes, sand, rocks ,water crossings, steps and more rocks and sand but overall it was fun even though technical at places

Because i was alone i made sure to ride well within my means also there was no rush and i stopped to take lots of pictures being new to the area

lunch stop and food for a king

As i came out the pass down to Wuppertal i noticed my tyre pressure monitor going dilly and found a sharp stone had punctured my rear Karoo tyre

Wuppertal

Must say my first puncture in years as i mostly ride on TKCs but couldn’t find stock when i needed to replace…..it was a bad choice to go for these tyres i hated the road noise and the grip leaves much to be desired in my view also WTF with a sharp stone penetrating the rubber….I’ve ridden miles of stoney areas with my TKCs unscathed…..anyway my view my rant…..Im going back to TKCs asap

in these small towns are super friendly and i had an audience of kids for support while fixing my Tyre…..thanks to ChrisL i bought a pump from many years ago i don’t go on any trips without taking puncture kit and the pump i got from him with.

after fixing the puncture and buying the kids some ice pops i was on my way to my destination for the night Niewoudsville

there were still lots of flowers out and the country side was nice and scenic had to stop a few times to take pictures

I had been on the Dirt road R364 from Clanwilliam to Niewoudville via the Botterkloof pass  but it still takes my breath for sheer beauty

by late afternoon I arrived in Niewoudville

stopped for petrol and had a nice chat with the Wife of the Uncle who owns all those old bikes…….also took some time to go look at his collection again…..for sure a must do if ever you in Niewoudsville I’m sure its not going to be there forever

old bike collection

(just by and by the aunty told me that they had not sold the collection but they are in talks with a guy from Ireland and the number was around 10bar but the deal is far from tied up its currently hanging in the air)

thats all i know…. i told her that it should be in a museum in cape town…..buts thats another story

any way so after this i went looking for a camp sight based on her recommendation……..another uncle offered me a camp sight at R220 or my own house at R320………so there i went Glamping again

Glamping in Niewoudsville

Bought firewood in town and that evening just chilled out reading my book and braaing my vacuum packed meat under the new moon
life was great

next day i headed out to Loeriesfontien a weird place to me…. been there a few times and on both occasions the place was empty of human beings….and the one or two i saw looked strangely at us passing through……that movie Body Snatchers and Aliens comes to mind…..but this Saturday the town seemed pretty normal and I spotted about 20 locals hanging around……so there went that Alien takeover idea i had ;-)

Loeriesfontein

From Loeriesfontein I took the dirt R355 then left on the R358 dirt my aim was to do the Rooiwalspoort and the Ottaspoort passes and come out at Garies then on to Hondeklipbaai to chill for a few days as I haven’t been there in years

Whats a story without a selfie

Well the Ottaspoort pass road ran between farms and i opened and closed gates all day long….it was very scenic….but my fitness levels were tested big time…….i wished i had my wife along she is a good gate keeper ;-)

the 83km of dirt from Garies to Hondeklipbaai is kak finished and klaar……corrugated and  more corrugated and badly corrugated …..I eventually found the best setting on my ESA suspension at small mountain soft….this was when my teeth rattled the least……fast slow make no difference the road is just plain terrible….i felt for my bike but it ate up whatever i threw at it

Hondeklipbaai the perfect spot for peace and tranquility as there is a lot of nothing that happens there seven days a week they know who the bad guys are apparently there are two and one is currently in jail …the other is watched as they all have nothing better to do….so no crime and they leave stuff open

i found a nice spot just up from the harbour as the camp site is shockingly barren and dry …i was definitely going to Glamp here…..small world found I knew the owner from a distance and we had mutual friends he let me stay at his self-catering spot Die Baai Se Bek for a good rate and i ended up spending two days there….Walking the beach, along the rocks, reading my book and braaing….really got time to unwind

After the rest day(now Monday) i took the coastal route up to Kliensee and then Port Nolloth i hadn’t been to this part of the world in ages and it was quiet astonishing to see how the mining has ceased in the area…Kliensee looked like a ghost town the last time i was here the Spar was still operating this time it was all boarded up if i saw five people in the town it was a lot.

Just before Kliensee

Just other side of Hondeklipbaai  at Koingnaas there is a narrow tar road obviously used for mining back in the day all the way to Kliensee after Kliensee to PortNolloth its dirt, sandy and corrugated …..you had better pay attention here there were some hectic sandy patches and one can see there is no upkeep of this road….

Arrived in Port Nolloth nice and early so went out to Mc Dougalls bay the recommended place to stay……the camp site looked a shocker and with the wind howling i knew i was going to Glamp
Not so nice camp spot at Mc Dougalls Bay

Found a nice spot on the beach….door open to the sea….cant ask for better but the self catering unit was not ready and i ended up going to Port Nolloth town to kill a few hours while they got the place ready for me

Not that PortNolloth will be a major destination point for many but i can recommend the little restaurant Vespetti….had a huge biker breakfast meal for R100 with a nice view over the ocean

Nice little restaurant Vispettis

The Museum

later on another worthwhile visit to the little museum for R20 was well worth it learning about the birth of the little town, how they discovered copper then diamonds then the history of diamond diving etc

Port Nolloth

so my last afternoon evening on the road i spent reading my second book at McDougalls bay overlooking the ocean from my verandah …….life was/is good

View from my Glampsite

My last Sunset

Next day i took the road less travelled on my GS the N7 home

THE END  ;-)
