As a Yamaha fan, I will obviously disagree with runner about those gearboxes being weak, and while "lugging" is certainly bad for any engine, the fact that top gear is ok indicates that
lugging was not the problem.
In a case of lugging[riding in too high a gear for engine revs] it is usually top gear that gets the brunt of the abuse.
Also Springbokkie is a competition bike, ridden in competitions, when would it get time to be "lugged"? :pot:
I can't even tell which gear is stuffed from that photo but statistically speaking, third gear will see most of the abuse seeing as from 3rd, you are in the middle of the usable ranges.

It's thus easier to sit in 3rd and avoid down shifting to 2nd or 1st, by lugging it or revving it higher and avoiding shifting to 4th.
You can cover 2nd 3rd and 4th gear just fine with 3rd and this is where we operate most of the time.

Or so I would think. :)

The reason why you see a lot of five speed boxes with damages to third does not have that much to do with you riding in third. It is connected to how the box works: Third gear driving is splined to the shaft whilst second driving and fourth driving rotate freely on the main shaft. Engaging second or fourth closes the dog clutch between third gear driving and the respective driving gear on the main shaft. Means in second, third and fourth third gear driving always transfers torque either over its teeth or over one of its two dog clutches. Short shifting into second or fourth will break this driving third gear.

Short shifting poses two problems:
A dog clutch is not supposed to be opened whilst transferring torque. If the dog clutch is under load you will cause excessive wear on the selector forks and the grooves in which they run.
If the dog clutch is closed whilst the clutch is pulled only the rotational inertia of clutch, main shaft and gears will create some shock loading of the dogs. If you don't pull the clutch and change gears and don't get it perfectly right you put an enormous shock load onto the dog clutch.

Exactly, and hence my "boot on gear lever" warning.

Speaking of dog clutches and the like, I was confused confused so I did a search.

This is what I found on the internet:

Natalie Ast - H&M Turquoise Dog Clutch, H&M Turquoise Cuff, H&M Gold Sunglasses, Tulle Dress - Anna Dello Russo Clutch & Cuff | LOOKBOOK

Initially I was perplexed and confused, but then I remembered the internet is always right, so I came to terms with what lecap and 2StrokeDan was saying. Im glad I looked it up. I will stop riding like a poephol and look after my dog clutch, because hes a beautiful thing to break. ;D
