If you've never ridden this pass between Cradock and Pearston, we can really recommend it. It starts off with a sort of sweetener in the form of the beautiful Maraiskloof - well worth being listed as a pass/poort in it's own right, for it's length, corners and scenery, but it only forms a foretaste of what's to come further up the mountain when you reach the real start of the Swaershoek Pass.

We never did find out why this pass is called Brother-in-Laws Pass, but that must be an interesting story in itself. The road is in remarkably good condition and the only time things get tough here is when the snow falls - which it does in the winter and with a summit altitude of 1616m things will get nice and slippery. Many cars get rescued here by local farmers and almost all of them drive Land Cruiser bakkies (met tralies!)

The views up towards the dominant mountain of Blinkberg are sublime and this pass is almost 20 km long when factoring the Maraiskloof in as well. If you remain on the R377, you will arrive at Pearston 70 km later and will have had the privilege of descending the Buffelshoek Pass as well.

Put this one on your bucket list!
