The GS800 haters can say what they want - but it is and will still probably for some time be the most successful mid-size adv bike of all time!!! :peepwall:
If it wasn't for the 800's success, their might possibly not have been a "mid-size" segment!!! I owned the legend too - XRV750, and believe me - the 800's are streets better - just not the same character... :pot:

Altie 7delaan will shortly tell you that 100's of thousands of happy Conquest owners are also, well....happy.

And in a way this adresses the purpose of the T7. Not built to win the Dakar, but built reliably and solidly for the average rider, which is the vast majority of the D/S world.

Not if the Conquest was the price of a Merc A Class....

That is true, all buyers of the T7 will be very happy with it for a long time.
We still waiting for official pricing.
However, I strongly disagree with "buyers should be willing to pay a premium price for the T7 because it is reliable"
Why must we start to pay more now for a reliable Jap adv bike??

Be interesting to see the RandD being split up.
Change the software of a roadbike engine. Commission Pol. Couple M1 engines.

Look Altie, there is a certain reward, a feeling of accomplishment, when you overhaul your clutch in your garage/mancave yourself, but most would be willing to pay a premium for it not to fail in the first place.

Call it old school, but there are lots of people who cherish reliability.

And I say this as someone who can fix things myself.  It's just that I'd rather be riding than swinging spanners, when it comes to my bikes.

But there is a difference in paying for a "indestructible clutch ", versus a clutch that will last a real long time because your machine puts out half the power of the competition.

Are you saying that KTM is using a half power rated clutch? :ricky:

A quick google search shows the following UK/US pricing. I compared with KTM and added the GS and AT to compare with bigger adventure bikes.

Yamaha T7: $10 000
KTM 790 Adv: $13 499
BMW F850GS: $13 345
BMW F850GS Adv: $14 295
Africa Twin: $14 399
Africa Twin Adv S: $17 199

I guess it will be popular in the US given the competitive price.

In the UK, it looks a bit different.

Yamaha T7: £ 9 147
KTM 790 Adv: £11 299 (Current special: £9 799)
BMW F850GS: £10 185
BMW F850GS Adv: £11 105
Africa Twin: £12 195
Africa Twin DCT: £12 995
Africa Twin Adv S: £14 649 (DCT £15 849)

This UK is a market where the 1200 range across the board sells better than the midrange. Riders either tour on big bikes or go greenlaning on small affordable DS bikes.

Dan, I think sometimes we are just being a bit too hard on our KTM owning friends. We both know that if we go riding with a group that has 3 or more KTM's that at some point we will be all standing round a dead KTM. This weekend I went for a ride with 3 KTM/Husky owners and we rode the whole day without a breakdown and I thought the hex had been lifted.  Well, almost.

Ian I'm afraid your KZN/WFO roots are showing. Who else would be brave enough (or stupid enough??) to take a Versys on a ride where everyone else was on knobbly tyred, protected to the hilt, 'proper' off road bikes and still find the time and energy to take photos????

You are quite right Pete. When Mr Kawasaki made the Versys he didn't think about how it was going to get over fallen trees and wash away creeks. Managed fine though but it took a bit of a beating. I always used to have a giggle at the soft as butter rims on the GS 800 but the Kwaka must be close. I have to confess these dings are from my previous ride with the man on the Spanish adventure bike, I was a lot more careful this time!   Haven't had time to get the torch out and straighten them up.

Yet some will argue that cast rims are just as strong as spokes for instance KTM390  :pot:
