The new Safari Tanks KTM 690 tanks break cover
« on: November 11, 2016, 07:50:16 am »
These just out...

Early 2017 release, apparently. Quite a strange choice - I thought the KTM 690 was being shelved? I wonder if they'll fit the 701...

Not sure I agree. More fuel and it's lower. I think they look much better than the old safari tank and this is pre-prod version.

I'm really not sure about the split tank - I would probably prefer the old one piece one. I have 690 with Omega rally kit, which is great, but looking backwards, if I would probably be better off with the old Safari tank. The reason being it is (I believe) much more robust for heavy duty in rocks. One of the rides I still need to do is Namaqualand 4x4 ecotrail, which of course must include the dash down and up the 'Road to Hell'. From what I have seen I would feel confident to venture there on my 630 with big safari tank which can withstand rocks and stuff, but would feel a bit more apprehensive with the Omega kit as I would not want to test that one on the rocks.

And the new 2 split tanks take away some of that rigidity/proitection old tank provided IMO.

My brother was part of our posse on that trip with his Safari tank-equipped 690. And it went down on the rocks more than a few times. So yes, in principle I do agree - a unitary tank is tougher, but it does depend a lot on the mounting system. Safari generally have very solid mounting. And an advantage of the split tank is if one side punctures you can shut the tap and keep the other side intact.

The Acerbis 20l tank on the current 450/500 is way weaker than the old 525 one because it's much less well braced. I broke one on Amageza 2014, and I'm not the only one I know of, so strength of the system really comes down to multiple factors, I guess. This new Safari split system looks like it carries the fuel way down low, which will be excellent for handling.

What's always put me off the Omega system is the rigid, fragile carbon/fibre construction. I guess you can repair it, but seems much more fragile than the poly tanks.

Just needs a sticker kit and will look great. Safari tanks can take a bashing, I have one on my SE and Kamanya has one on his 950/990 and both have fallen over more than once.

Check the packaging tape holding the Safari logo in place.  That's because sticker kits don't adhere to the Safaris.

You quite right that stickers don't stick to safari tanks - I have tried - though I have seen guys advertising perforated stickers for tanks. I think the Safari logos are moulded into the tank when manufactured however.

I've yet to see a touring bike that's authentically pleasing to the eye. Since when is adventure biking about looks rather than form & function? Oh wait, this is the WD's, that's a rhetorical question BTW. Let's be honest here, the existing Safari tank for the 690 isn't exactly a looker either.
As long as it's got the range, is tough enough to take a fall & doesn't cost you 10K for 5l like the Omega kits, then it has my vote. When you've finished your trip/race just take it off and store it  :thumleft:

I enquired about if and if they will be making a tank for the 701 and received this reply:

Quote
We are developing a long range fuel tank for the Husqvarna 701 and KTM690. We expect the KTM690 to be available June17 and the FE701 to be available July17. At this stage we don’t have pricing however we will be posting progress updates to our website..
