I think some guys are complicating this.
An add appears . One of the following applies
1 . You either want it
2 . or inspect it
3 . or need time to get your finances in order .
So it it is 1 above you say " I take it " . There now is a contract . An offer to sell was accepted. You now need to pay and arrange delivery . No problem for other dogs.
If nr 2 or 3 you say so . I want to inspect or I need to get my money right .
But when I see dibs I accept that the item is gone , which may not be the case.
I say dibbs must fall.

But why?

Each and every seller needs to decide whether he will accept a dibs and state a clear yay, or nay.  No need for a forum rule to exist.

there is a place for both ie dips and straight out cash sale.

i've purhased a number of items where i called dips but first had to double check size.

someone mentioned do your homework which also applies.

maybe a new possible rule is when dips are called the buyer needs to make arrangements with the seller within a certain timeframe ie 24 hours or automatically forfeit...

A forum with rules, lekker man!

Be a gentleman, be honest, don't stuff people around, when advertising attend to your thread, trust and be trusted, that's the only rules I try and abide by.  I will tell you if no dibs apply, otherwise I ask you to back up your PM with a dibs on the thread.

Simple.
"If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don't want them.  I want men who will come if there is no road at all."
