. Or adventure and adventure R? JA

Both have the same ride modes and electronics?  JA, except R has manual suspension settings
Both have TPMS and tubeless wheels?  JA
The soft rims issue is primarily an issue on the front or on the rear as well? What does the exel upgrade cost roughly? kak baie, and then its tubes.

Dankie

m0lt3n - I recently spent 2 months riding a 2010 GSA on a 9000 km trip.  Really liked it for the general touring plus a little bit of dirt road that I used it for.  Now I have bought an 1190 Adventure.  I see that many guys will recommend the 1190R but I suggest you try both the R and non-R versions.  I think if you come from the GS and are not wanting to do too much hardcore offroad that you will enjoy the non-R more.  I certainly do.  I had the R before but prefer the feel that the non-R gives you with the smaller wheels.

Apart from that, reading through your comments I think it is time to just get one and not worry about the small things.  They are really nice bikes and I am sure that you will enjoy it.  The one thing where I think the GS is much better than the KTM is the way you are shielded by the screen.  The buffeting and windnoise on the 1190 is annoying.  But that of course depends on your height as well.  Still trying to get the screen right to get rid of that.

I am convinced to stop stressing the little things and planning to go ahead

So two things I need still to stop stress on...
I am 450km from the nearest KTM dealer, which is Bloem. SO even if the 1190 is reliable, I am a bit tough on bikes, not because I am good but because I fall so much.
Aaaaand money, timing my sale, getting the best for my bike and getting an 1190 for a good deal.

Either way, I will be calling KTM in Bloem today and ask what they have and if they are willing to trade....
BMW is currently pushing sales and offering huge trades, I will check that also this coming weekend.

what I hear from riders, in our Store, is that the KTM - say 950/990 going back 5 or 10years, was developed to use EVERY available horsepower, and thus they were 'highly strung/race machines/race ready', and that there was a RELATIVELY higher failure rate of some components than say a bike that puts out LESS HP for a given cc....

for example, the 2016 1000cc CRF 1000L Africa Twin puts out 100HP for its 1000cc engine...

10 YEARS ago, KTM was getting 100HP out of the 990, also from roughly 1000cc, yet we know engine technology has leaped forward in 10 years, so the Africa Twin of today may be less 'stressed' as when compared to the KTM 990 of 10 years back.

Cheers

I think this combined with, or leads to, harsher use of the bike, so the stressed components are then extra stressed when compared to the next bland bike.

but let me call KTM Bloem now!

Don't let that discourage you.  Way too much is made of how nice your dealership is.  The whole thing is you buy what you desire and then you ride it.  The only time that did not work for me was when I bought a Bimota SB6.  That thing was just a little too much of an "enthousiasts" bike.

I also think the biking/motor trade is so fabulously good these days that dealers don't call you back.  Ordered a new Superduke some years ago, went back 3 times to ask where my bike was and every time it came as a surprise to the salesman that I wanted one.  In the end I bought a 690 as they had one on the floor and I could have it the next day.  And I am happy with that choice.

Tried to order a new 701 recently but the salesman could not be bothered to send me the required paperwork so I could pay the deposit.  Bought an 1190 in the meantime and will just keep my 690 for a bit longer.

And lastly, tried to buy a 4x4 Hilux from Toyota the other day.  They were just going clean it up a bit and call me.  Well, still waiting, hence my conclusion that the motor trade is doing well.

But hang in and persist for the 1190, it is a hoot.

My 1190 R 30 000km service cost R 7 800; 45 000km's cost me R 1 700 and R 60 000km service was about R 6000. As manic says, it chows back tyres. Pirelli Scorpions I get 4 500km's if I stretch replacing them. I'm on 63 000km's now and touch wood, no issues yet. fork seals will be done now at R 2 500 quoted cost. My fuel range according to bike computer is 340k's on a tank although I've filled up on "0" fuel range before but it only took 18 liters ??? No regrets so far.... it's a absolute jol

Hey Robslim. Some nice info, can you maybe say what was done extra with the more expensive services? I am guessing they did not include tyres?

They check the valve clearances every 30k kms so that is quite a lot more labour intensive. Although it isn't rocket science and any competent mechanic could do it, so once out of warranty you aren't tied to KTM.

I checked some adds on Gumtree so now have some more questions, please hang in there?

On the classifieds there is no bike above 33k km, so officially Robslim above is the 1190 with the highest mileage I know of. And I normally see high milers as a good sign so I am not going to lie, its not comforting.

Anyhow, on classifieds there were a few bargains, the types that one normally stay clear off, but it reminded me I never got a specific answer...
What is the worst case scenario repair if one were to buy a bargain and something is wrong?
a R7800 service is scary compared to GS, the worst to get on a GS is:
clutch, a R12k bill, (done on my bike by previous owner), final drive repair (replace bearing or snap off unit, previous owner and myself) about R10k
and finally crank oil leak is also about R9k (current bike, lots of labour to split bike for repair).
My bikes have been heavily abused, and those are basically as bad as it gets. the engines dont die and I would assume the same for the 1190. But R7800 for a service is flippen close to my worst case.

So in short, if I buy an 2013 1190 with 33000km for R115k, what is the worst that can happen to my wallet if the bike was abused?
what is chain and sprockets? R3k?

Also, how does the 1190 warranty work? normally I couldnt care less, but this time you need to be sure about a Unifilter before you dont care, and most have the other-whaterver-its-called that the dealer prefer.

For me, worst case would be a head rebuild because of dust.  I think the R7800 service would pale in comparison to that cost.

Haven't actually heard of anyone needing an 1190 clutch.  It's a wet clutch so should last much longer than a GS clutch.    Out of warranty, I would find a reliable indy and not use KTM for anything personally.

On the 2013 first models, dust was a BIG issue. KTM did not recognize there was a problem at first, so alot of bikes got dust in the motors.

So unless you know the guy, and you can take his word that he ran a Unifilter from day 1, I would stay clear of the 2013 models  :peepwall:

Mine is also a 2013. I think my Uni went in on around 2000km. I was the first oke to get the Filter. Had to import myself before RAD even got the Import rights on it.

I open the airbox up myself a few times, clean as a whistle  :thumleft:

You need to get a bike like mine that is for sale  :laughing4:

1000km Service.
7500km Service.
13 000km Service.
18 000km Service.

Its at KTM as we speak to do the 18 000km. Replacing Neck bearings as a caution.

Services are every 15 000km, but my annuals made me service alot more, and I like fresh oil.
Running on Castrol POWER 1 full synthetic from day 1, best oil you can get
