My first Adventure bike - 2007 KTM 640 Adventure
« on: December 07, 2016, 06:38:08 pm »
Here goes,

After riding my dads Bmw 650 x country 3 months ago.. i was hooked.. completely hooked. We did a Cederberg/tankwa/uitspankraal/wupperthal trip.

The bm was new to the stable, for years we cruised on a DT175 and XL185.

So i did my research, dakar / xt / klr / tenere but every time i looked at the 640ktm.. i was like YES!! Thats it!

I knew that the 640 wouldn't be the most reliable or sensible purchase. But i went and drove one..which I ended up purchasing.

After a good clean i noticed some things that i dont like, mainly cosmetic issues..

But for now...I am happy, very happy!

On Saturday, I Ride:)

When we removed the pannier racks, a bolt broke off. ( there are many rusty bolts )

We tried, tried and tried.. and saw we were not going to win.

I made some calls and got a "mobile bolt removal" company to come and sort me out :/

Job done.

After that i got some fresh tires.

TKC 80 , front and back.

The bike had 130/80 at the back, the bookie says 140 - so we went for the 140.

Happy Happy!

Next up.. the spokes.

The bike came with those spoke covers. And once removed...rust...

We managed to get most of them back to there former glory. But Im still not happy.

Im not getting into the "hard to reach" places.

I was quoted R450 per wheel excluding the spokes.

I could go original or stainless steel.

Waiting for the costing on the stainless steel option.

Hi Pierre

Congrats on the purchase of one of the very last 640s

It was a pleasure meeting you and your dad and doing business with you guys - I look forward to enjoying a ride with you guys some day  :ricky:

The bike definitely sold to the right person in the end - you are doing exactly (and more) than I would have done if it was mine

Look after the bike and it will look after you - do not listen to all the bad press about 640s - those stories come from people who don't know how to look after their stuff  :pot:

Regards

Justin  :thumleft:

PS - even though it was made in 2007 it was only first registered in 2008 and thus according to Natis it is a 2008 - maybe the only one in the world

Only 640 I know that did not give any problems belonged to Bradleys.
pm him and ask him how he treated/servived his bike.
He must have done something right as he rode the wheels off it but it never broke.
