This RR is for those just starting out (like us) and need to get to their destination quickly (tar roads).

On our recent trip to the south coast we have the following to share.

We enjoyed the alternative routes from JHB to the south coast (Clarens, sterkfontein, winterton, Eskort, Nottingham rd, Umbumbulu rd - R603) the only toll we paid was Oribi.

Not wanting to repeat the trip back we tried the following route:

Port Edward, Izingolweni road, N2 (past Harding), Kokstad, R617 to Underberg, Bulwer, Boston and finally Howick.

The N2 from Port Shepstone to Kokstad was a revelation ! as it has recently been upgraded and the scenery was good. The mountain passes and riding in the mist was also new experience for us.
The road winding through the forests around Harding was excellent.
The R617 was just as beautiful but totally different - the changing views of the Drakensberg are surreal, the fast turns and switchbacks were a lot of fun. Kingscote Cutting (mountain pass) was impressive. We stopped at the Olde Duck for a quick cappuccino before entering Underberg.
From Underberg to Howick was same old same old with taxis and inconsiderate NPS and NP cars..

As we are new to adventure biking we only chose tar roads for this holiday - to get to know the bike better.

Another impressive road worth a mention was the R103 between Escort and Mooi river.

Our next trip will be 70% tar and 30% in the Sabie Area.
