Cut it in strips to make STRONG elastic bands to secure things like tools together.

If you add preload on spring you need to add more rebound damping

D-1 day!!
Tomorrow this time I will be sweating on Old Mill Drift near Clarens! Still need to travel a 1000km to there but I am still stuck at work!

So I have changed the oil on my bike, filter was fine so that's sorted. MTC failure still comes and goes, especially after spinning the rear some, but I will live with that. Its possible to be the rear sensor on the wheel, ABS or speed sensor? I fitted a 44 rear sprocket yesterday and saw the sensor takes some abuse with me not being to good at changing wheels.

Concerns I have for this trip is I felt yesterday again that my stearing head bearing is loose again, I will see when there is a gap to tighten them again. And another thing, the bracket of the windscreen is loose, hopefully that doesn't bite me in the ass. Now I just want to start the trip! My first proper trip in a few years

Update from lesotho...
We were pretty tired last night and went to bed early, but this is long past normal wake up time for me so I am bored while the others are still sleeping...so now I do an updatr!

Windscreen bracket is fine in lowest sstting and only have a very slight stearing head bearing knock still after tightening.
So other than getting MTC warnings and general failure warnings all the time the bike is actually doing very well.

To be honest, more than just very well. Its awesome! I ride in offroad mode now to save the rear tire plus I am very rusted, only got back in the groove late in the dày and then started hammering it. We skipped old mill drift and only did monantsa pass and sone other back roads, see spotwalla link. Huge ruts and washouts and the bike is taking it like a champ! I am super happy with the suspension upgrade, I dont think I would have gotten far without it. I am really gunning it over some of those ruts and it just takes it all. Its addictive!

Then also the sprocket swop is also awesome. Bike pulls like a train now in just about any gear. A lot of the times I take on a steep incline in 2nd with very little momentum where others gear down to 1st and I can still just gun it. It is making life just so easy. But we will swop bikes a little sometime then I can give a comparritive opinion vs a late model 990R (fully uograded) and my buddy's opinion on the 1190 as well.

Now, if only we can remember to buy more water when there is an opportunity to do so!

Uodate time after the big trip!
Its defibitely a love/hate relationship...

I will do a ride report whcih will give a good picture of how tough the terrain is that we did, but let me summarise I have not seen an 1190 doibg similar terrain on this forum yet. It was very tough and the bikes really is capable.

We were 2x 1190s and 2x 990s. My 1190 had suspension upgrade, the other was also a 2013 model and no upgrade, set to hardest with Tinus on the back weighing in at I would guess above 100kg. Both 990s was the 265mm travel models and both upgraded. I was capable of keeping up in all terrain, from the most extreme rocky to fast gravel roads. Only once did I find that the 1190 was lacking was when we had to go down a particukar high step up. I will add a picture. The 1190 beached and had to be pushed over while the 990 scraped. Not enough of an issue for me to rate the 990 now a better offroad bike.

But...
My bike is pretty tired now, to the point that I cut the trip short. The other guys quit earlier for various reasons other than their bikes, but I was set up for another day but believe it would not have been a good thing for my bike.
For one I have a bash plate boĺt sheared off in the engine. Probably when I took the wrong line somewhere. I cant remember ever really hitting it very hard and would add its a shit design compared to the GS where I have taken much harder shots and only broken brackets, also never stuck with loose rattling bashplate.
Then the damn stearing head bearings! I had to tighten them every second night and every night at the end of the trip. They were tightened before the trip also. Before this bike I did not even know what they were. I will now have them replaced again and see if that helps, but doubt it, they were new and it also seems to be a common issue.
At the end of the trip my whole head unit / speedo cluster seemed loose. This could be me being overly 'aware' due to having read up to much, but I will see. But from reading up I know that the whole cluster is mounted on plastic brackets which wears when doing loads of gravel. So I will strip and see.

Other than that the mirrors and hand guards are alks broken. I knew the oem handguards are not to strong but wasnt expecting that. The one broke when sand beneath the sidestand gave in and I grabbed the handle with oart of my hand on the handguard. It broke due to minimal force. But like I said, I knew and accepted before the trip that they will probably not last. Mirrors I could not get loose to bend out of the way, they must have some serious loctite on them. Anyhow, more upgrades then due in that department.

Doing the next strip and fixing up I will definjtely be using loads of loctite, I lkst a lot of bolts that came loose, probably my own sloppyness.

The error messages...well what can I say...at least MTC failure on in street mode is fun. Its still heavy frustrating though to see MTC failure and general failure almost within 5 minutes of every startup. Once the error occurs the fuel rance and oil temp readings also dont show plus I cant change ride modes.

In summary, the bike is still massive fun. I am trying to not be a whining bitch but rather stating the facts. I hope tbats how it goes. I would still not have done this trip on anything else.

This time I will do an insurance claim as I did have an off (or 2) so I will see what comes of that.

I found it is better to take it slow in the technical terrain in Lesotho and rather look for a better line. Those routes looks familiar.

It does not help to only tighten the neck bearings if you don't loosen the triple clamp. Then tighten it until the steering does not move freely anymore and then slightly loosen. That should take care of it.

There is 4 bolts holding the fairing and instrument cluster. If they are not fastened using locktite you will definitely loose them. Replace the bolt and fasten it, that should sort out the lose speedo.

I use foldable mirrors, cheap and in 8 years I have yet to destroy one. I'll attach a pictrure

I have replaced the abs sensor on the rear wheel and that sorted out the MTC failure problem.

Good luck

Lesson learnt. Going to get fold-able mirrors but have a few more serious things to take care such as I spotted what I think is oil on my right fork (red one).
I'll take it for a short spin to confirm and further to Martin's earlier point on suspension I need to get better suspension.
Don't want to spoil the RR but other cosmetic damage include bent hand guards and mirrors :-)

Great feedback Twister. It was you I recently asked about that rear abs sensor I take it, couldnt find the thread to see if it worked. So awesome news.

I washed the bike and now feel a lot more positive. Side panels did not scratch as I ibitially thought.
My issues summarised for sorting out now:
Neck bearings I will tighten myself and loctite that flippen nut.
Replace and loctite fairing bolts
Drill out bolt from engine holding bashplate
My stearibg damper is broken somehow. In the middle on the mount, weird, I reckin its part of the knock that bend my rim and insurance should cover it :)
Replace front rim
Bracket holding windscreen worn on one side
Replace rear abs sensor.
And while it is at ktm I will have valve clearances done.
Replace handguards and mirrors. I want the fancy one with mirror sliding into handguard, just want to double check again if they are strong like cycra or barkbusters.
Replace broken front wheel mudguard, I may or may not have seen a sheep somewhere near me when I connected that rock that caused my insurance inducing spill.

Saw these mirrors sold under the brand rotweiler. Drill 2x small holes in the handguard and they fold into the handguard. They are expensive at circa USD 230.
I'm in two minds about the hand guard mount, if you bend/loose a handguard, you loose the mirror too as opposed to having more redundancy with a standard foldable mirrors.

I got the quotation for a full 30k km service, need some advice...

do I need to pay the almost R1500 for the 4 KTM spark plugs?
2x NGK LKAR9BI9 and 2x LMAR7A-9

And I have read a lot on cleaning the petrol filters yourself and re-using, is this advised? I do intend to fit a pre filter.

5 hours of labour comes to R2k as well, hopefully that also ends up being less.

Oh and also, what suggestions do you guys have for handguards? I do not like the look of the Cycra or of the orange KTM powerparts ones. Currently I am thinking of getting Barkbusters. Good or bad idea? Yesterday I saw a pic of SW motech Cobra as well which looked nice, I am just not to sure on how strong they are, I know nothing about them actually.

Can't answer on the spark plugs but guess that is what they cost.

Got the barkbusters from bikegear delivered today, will fit them and send a photo. They certainly not as bulky as the cycra's I broke and thickness of the aluminium seems the same as the cycra. Whether that is indicative of strength I don't know, guess if you hit it on the wrong spot they will bend which is what they are supposed to do as opposed to a bent handlebar.

Waiting for Christiaan to respond on the pre-fuel filter on the thread, also keen to do that but won't be stripping unless I have everything, not taking that tank off twice.

How much are BarkBuster and Cycra compared to the Highway Dirt Bike setup?

HDB is best you can buy.......... period!

But the full one(strong) for tech riding is expensive

Black option of this is what i want

Yeh that's why I'm asking.

If the cycras are like 2000 then it makes sense to go a little more for the HDB setup.
